hYou people making me spend money...

Apparently, the Kelty Carport and Kelty Car Tarp are discontinued. With some searching, I found a Kelty "Noah's Tarp", which apparently is also discontinued. It doesn't come with poles, but that's OK, I happen to have a few sitting around.

I also have a Kelty Sun Shade, which I like. 4 of us sat under it for 2 1/2 days on our last Barney Riley trip last October.

Each of these can easily be configured into an awning off of a roof rack, or the tailgate area. Or away from the truck entirely. Pretty versatile setup, I think.

why wouldn't a tarp , some poles, a few zip ties and some rope , etc. work ... who cares if its some thing that cost 628 bucks ... ha ... no not for me ... its a portable shade ... I have a tarp ,rope and zips, I'll find some poles and be good to go .... my 2 cents

You're absolutely right. That has been what I've done for years.

I'm upgrading. And those are the same poles I've had for years.

Well I guess I'm just a simpleton ! but after all It's only a portable shade maker, and I don't care about the newest , new fangled contraption for making shade, no offense to ones that want that , its just not for me ... parking underneath a big tree works for me as well ! ha

I made one, cost me less than $20, 6x8. Testing it this weekend, details here Izzy's amateur hour, post 209 and parts list right after that one.

Come to Nevada and try the tree thing. Let me know how that works out for you.

This is the 'awning' I use... got the idea from Mark (@65swb45) - $19.99 at Costco... ropes, included... poles extra (I use 2, but can get by with 1, 2 or 3)... 13' triangle... easy up, works great

Here's the same campsite, from above... you can see, we camped in a forest...

Posted this in another thread but thought I'd post here. Cheapo camo plastic tarp, 7' of 1" PVC, 2 aluminum tent poles I had laying around, two tent stakes,

couple lengths of rope. when rolled up I use 4 of those bungee loops with the ball to hold it together, then use the same "bungee balls" to attach to the roof rack. I did have to lower the tent poles to let the rain roll off, but was very pleased how well it worked.

Naw, you got trees there @Bomar, so that's not fair. Ha - j/k.

Seriously though, where did you pick that up? Looks like Alu-Cab is South Africa-based. Very nice.

I'm in the market to purchase a 6 x 8 or so awning that attaches to the side of my roof rack on my fj60.

I'm looking at the ARB, Tepui and the smittybuilt. I cant tell if im tripping or not but it looks like the only difference is the price and the color of the bag! Anyone know first hand if this is the case?

One key difference for ARB versus the others is that the newer ARB awnings are a full 8' "deep". So the ARB2500 awning is 8'x8', instead of the rest that are 8' x 6'. (The ARB 2000 is 6' x 8', whereas the others are 6' x 6').

Those extra two feet of extension make a big difference for us because the shade off the side of our rig sort of defines the "living room". The extra 16 square feet are AWESOME.

I really like the ARB awning. Simple and strong.

I'm sure the others are just like them or very similar. Originally 5 years ago, I picked both up for less than $200. I plan on using the ARB again on the new build...but was also looking hard at the Fiamma's.

One of my club members had a pretty nifty awning setup from Awnings, Tents, and Add-A-Rooms. inexpensive, compact, portable, multi-use, and switchable (from vehicles or to other side of vehicle).

These are the Frontrunner modular awnings They are about 11.5' wide by 7.5' deep. The neat thing is they are quickly removable with fasteners and mount to any roof rack bar to give versatility in where you want your awning. Takes about 5 mins setup with 2 people. Not affiliated with FR, but I like their rack and awning!

That's nice! Had it in any windy conditions? Curious how it does.
