I'm in the market to purchase a 6 x 8 or so awning that attaches to the side of my roof rack on my fj60.

I'm looking at the ARB, Tepui and the smittybuilt. I cant tell if im tripping or not but it looks like the only difference is the price and the color of the bag! Anyone know first hand if this is the case?

I was of the understanding that Tepui manufactured all their own kit; no rebadging on either other OEMs products as theirs or vice versa.

Taken a stop into their Santa Cruz headquarters and asked? Was a cool little set up in there. Got to crawl around the various models of RTTs :D

I was under the understanding that a good chunk of the RTT stuff is all made in the same couple plants in China and the major difference is QA/QC and material selection.

I like two poles a tarp and a couple straps myself..

Inquiring minds would like to know! It would make sense from an economic standpoint, though not to make it known from a marketing standpoint. Anyone with the low-down?

sounds like the awnings are more likely from the same place in China but could maybe be made with different components or material.
Thanks for the links!

I'm hoping to go with this one. I know one 80 owner here has it. Most affordable I've seen. Pic is from their site.

Oh wow thanks. Good info. I guess the cheap price is the trade off, get what you pay for.

@92LXAZ it does take awhile to put up... so if you want to buy mine, i used it once and is basically new. I upgraded the lines to 550 lines and sharpened all the stakes. Send me an IM

Uh yes Woody very nice. That would kind of blow the budget portion for me though :). I can see why everyone wants it.

You might find a Kelty Carport on Ebay. Kind of a PITA to set up but it can also be used as a changing room and a wind shelter by removing the poles, staking the edge down and opening the side wings.

I've never done it but you can also use the poles instead of a vehicle to support one side and form a half shelter.

If you can find one, Kelty Car Tarp works well, takes up virtually no space, and is easy to set up. Plenty of options for setting it up as you want for protection or privacy. This is ours in use on the Outer Banks in sustained 15-25mph winds - it did take 2 of us to set it up in those winds, but in a normal scenario 1 person can easily set it up. Got mine several years ago for $60 or so?

We have something similar to this that we use on the ground to shade dog crates. I did not work well with the pole setup. I thnk the Ezy Awning is cool if you are going to camp some place for multiple days. It's budget friendly. If you are going to move often the ARB, Tepui, Smittybilt (I have one) is the better way to go.
