Hey all,

I'm new to the forum as I've just purchased my first land cruiser. Bought a 1991 80 series with just around 75,000 miles. As it's a used car I'm on heightened alert about ever creak and rattle I come across, but I'm pretty sure this one might be indicative of something worse to come. When the transmission shifts from 2nd to 3rd gear there is a momentary 100-200 rpm rev prior to the shift. I can only assume this is due to some sort of clutch slippage. (Please bear with me as I am not the most mechanically incline when it comes to cars. Wanna know how a helicopter flies? I got you. But the Land Cruiser is my first "Man, WD40, and Duct Tape" adventure). I've been reading a few other threads and have seen mention of the throttle cable, solenoids, or slipping clutches. I was wondering if anyone had some pointers on diagnosing the problem. Even a link to a thread you know about would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forum and congrats on your new to you LC (with 75K miles on it). I have a 96 LC which has a different transmission, so I'm of no help to you. There will be many others here that have the same transmission as you and will help you troubleshoot it.

You probably need to tighten the kick-down cable, that will increase pressure and firm up the shifts. The cable attaches to the throttle so its pretty easy to find. Also, make sure to check the level and color of the transmission fluid. Congrats on finding a very low mile 80.

Thanks for the quick replies! I'll check into the pressure cable. Fluid level and color should be good. I just had an inspection performed, and one of the requirements was fluid checks (and I specifically asked about ATF). As for the low miles, I'll give you one more gem. Paid $6,000 for it.
I'm incredibly lucky because prices are wicked low in Japan AND 1 USD = 124 Yen right now.

Hey all, I'm having the same issue with my 1989 HJ60 that Navyator is (coincidence is that I too work on H-60 Helicopters) and I'm not Automotive savvy either.

Similar situation here. After the shift to 2nd, it will come out of gear and then go right back in. If I give enough throttle, it doesn't happen.

I'll second tightening the kickdown cable, it is the one with 14mm nuts. Spec on this adjustment is .5-1.5mm from bead on cable to red boot on cable housing. Adjust in half turn increments and drive to test each time until your satisfied.
