Philos - thanks man. I read through your build when i was prepping for this. How many layers and of what did you use?

and most importantly - why don't you have a cruiser any longer?!?

Any new cruiser in your sights? It'd be great to see more of your build prowess for us lowly  mechanics!

rob

haha!

I used the regular D'amplifier with just one layer. I did put some Ensolite over the rear quarters and over the transmission hump. as well as behind the door speakers. The Ensolite really helps with audio quality in terms of your stereo.

I've been contemplating another Landcruiser, but I'll catch flame as I've been looking at.....

....

wait for it...

UZJ100s:princess::princess::princess::princess:

I'd also consider a low mileage FZJ80, but boy are those hundo's COMFY!:o

Man I'm jealous. First because you did it and second because you beat me to it :flipoff2:

I have been to Anthony over at SSA about running the DeadLiner over it instead of Rhino Lining.

I'm hoping to have one layer of the LLP comparable if not a bit better than the ensolite. If i have enough i was going to line the doors as well.

UZJ100?! damn man - the betrayal...:ban: lol. No worries - better to roll in a LC of any type than some Volvo... oh wait... :flipoff2:. hehehe.

Glad to see you at least keep an eye on the 60's forum still. Get what you like and enjoy! though you know until you have another 60 we are going to point and laugh at you.:lol:

back to damplifier - worked on under the front seats. Passenger is nearly done. Going slow...

Thinking of how difficult to do headliner... man that looks like a bitch to pull down...

I hope it's going to be a big improvement. I'm getting pretty sick and tired of rolling my 87 while the new 84 is torn apart... I still have a long way to go. bodywork is the suck.

Yeah - ANT is pretty cool. Again if you are going to order something up just call him and talk with him for a few min. Super cool guy, and knows his stuff.

I thought about rhino lining (or deadliner, or hurculiner...) but figured it would be easier to pull up some adhesive mat than to try and break through line-x to mess w/ something...

Quit being a :princess: and just do it! :flipoff2:

I have to say, even more than the improved quietness, the doors/hood/tailgate now close with a thud rather than a high pitched twang. Makes the vehicle feel more substantial.

What's this talk of replacement vinyl????!
Did you find a good quality source? The Aussie Ebay one?
Watching this thread bigtime.

Hey Joe - to consolidate a bit and in case you didn't read through the thread linked. Here's a stolen Pic from Esh's post - which shows the new molded vs some FJ40 vinyl iirc:
62vinylfloor-2.jpg

(Again - this is Esh's vinyl - mine is still a few weeks out) Mine will be a different color - i chose the darker grey to more closely match carpet. The light grey was too light (more like this FJ40 vinyl).

I got under the Passenger seat completed yesterday, but no pics (nothing spectacular). Hope to tackle the last bit under driver seat tonight, and maybe the DS door(s)...

Slow going... I really want to get this done so i can start laying in the Luxury Liner pro! Then tape it up (seal it) and start sanding hte body!!

Marc - how much and of what did you use? Damplifier or Damplifier pro - how many sq ft - single layer or doubled (and where)?

Did you take any before and after measurements (db)?

Any trouble with doors staying open w/ extra weight?

thx!!

rob

That was an added bonus for me too with the more "solid" feeling throughout. No issues with the extra weight on the doors on mine.

nice thread man..
Great pics.
Hope everything worked out how you wanted it to!

Hey Ant!

I'm moving slow - too many projects. Love how easy it is to install the DP. Will be calling you soon to get some spectrum for some other areas (inner fender wells).

Can't wait to get bodywork/paint done so i can see how much quieter this will be now!

Sorry for the delay - I haven't been on Mud as much as usual.

I used the regular Damplifier. I don't recall exactly how much I used. I want to say i bought one of the bigger packs and one of the smaller ones for a total of like 120 sq ft. But I still have several sheets left over. I covered about 75% of the interior. I left the original factory tar stuff - and didn't overlap it much. I tried to almost everything, but focused on areas I thought generate the most noise (doors, tailgate, tranny hump, fenders). I also put a few sq feet under the hood between the hood and insulation.

I think more is always better, But it gets to be diminishing returns. And the stuff ain't cheap! I'm sure Damplifier Pro or doubling up is better. But I would guess it is 5% for 50% more cost. (I pulled both those numbers out of my ***, but you get what I mean).

I also used Second Skins' carpet mat - i forget what it's called, but it is a jute-like mat, but very stiff.

No trouble with the doors.

I didn't take any dB readings. There is still quite a bit of ambient noise - but it is from other sources (air flow through 20 year old weather stripping, transmission whine, etc).

The advice on the RAAMaudio page is to tap on the surface and see if you get any resonance. If you do, add more, if not you aren't helping anything by adding more.

That is essentially what I did while installing mine. It really helped to determine where to install as well as how much. I'm sure adding more still helps, but there is such a significant reduction once you put it on it seems like further improvement would be minimal. I might, at some point, add another layer to the tranny hump. Or maybe I'll just replace my whiny 4 speed with a 5 speed.

Great job Rob! Feel free to stop by and help me when you have the time:D. I just put a few square feet in my 60 (wanted to try it out before taking the plunge for the whole shebang)... but I did not remove the factory tar if it felt solidly adhered, I hope that was not a dumb move on my part.

I agree with you Mark. I covered just a small fraction of the front doors behind the speakers and around them and the "thunk" feels like that of a UZJ100 doors instead of the traditional 60 rattle.

Hey Rob
Just so you know, you would need 9 layers of 1/4" Ensolite, in order to get the results that just 1 layer of Luxury Liner Pro will deliver.

The products are nothing close to one another.

ANT

Are you doing new door and window seals too?

good point and one i think we forget sometimes. huge ingress for noise if they are really torn up.

Luckily doors were all sealed up with new by PO. I am going to the front door windows before i put trim back on.

rob

x2. New door gaskets from SOR made a huge difference in my truck.

What about the roof?

What are everyone's thoughts on sound deadener applied to the top? I've been following your work with great interest, as I'm doing a complete restoration/conversion on my '85 also. Realizing the work to remove headliner and insulation makes it prohibitive for some, but if you're replacing everything would it be worthwhile? I'm down to metal on the underside of the roof, and considering putting a layer of SS Damplifier at least over the front & rear seats, as well as fiber insulation and new headliner.

Overkill or benefit?

I bet you'd see a big improvement, but I'd love to hear if anyone's done it. Ditto for doing the hood; marc311 did his and it sounds like it made a diff. I know when I'm cruising at speed I can see the hood vibrating. That's got to be a noise contributer.

I put Refletex insulation on the underside of my '91 Suburban's roof. Made a huge difference in interior heat when in the desert, and it had a small impact but noticeable on interior noise. If/when I get to that stage on my 60 I plan to put a damper product on first, and then more of the same insulation.

ugh - i've been distracted by the weather, getting my bike running (save ga$!), etc.

thinking i need to dive back in and get this done. Did a big last week when i motivated... Got the first layer done on the tub, started 2nd layer over the tranny hump. I want to finish second layer over the hump and get doors finished. 1 of 4 done now...

I am thinking of doing the same to the roof... I was also thinking of using the spectrum spray from SS - but a bit intimidated about pulling the headliner and trying to get it back in afterwards.

Truck is pulled apart prepping for paint - not going to be on the road for a bit - sorry for so few updates!
