Finally get some time to work on the 60...I'll be cleaning and re-installing the side cover and items I removed to get it out.

Will most likely pull the PS and Air pump today and see about replacing/rebuilding them.

Haven't had much time to put the 60 back together due to work, but managed to put some sound proofing in the doors and rear quarter.....makes the doors sound like a Lexus when you shut the door! Got the interior panels back in as well.

Hopefully will get the diffs in this week.....

Ok you need to tell me more about the door panels. You cut to fit correct? Do they come in one big sheet? Where to order?

Timing Cover Seals Old versus New??

Ok-

I was given a 2f timing cover seal from a friend. When I pulled out the old seal off of my 1987 FJ60 2F it was obvious that the new seal was approx. 1/8 thicker, but everything else fit. I figured it was a replacement seal.

It fit the crank snuggle and fit into the timing cover perfect. It was clear that the lips of the new seal were going to run on a fresh surface on the crank instead of in the grooves made by the original seal.

I installed everything and moments later I receive a call from my friend who realized that timing cover seals are different for pre-1984 2F's and post-1984 2F's.

I ordered a new seal from Toyota and when it came in it is a thinner seal.....but the parts guys said it's not a problem to run the older seal since it fits and will run on the fresh surface of the crank and not in the grooves of the original seal, thererby reducing any leakage.

So here's the question????

Would you tear everything down and put in the original thin seal or keep the thicker seal in?

Thanks!

I would leave it in and run it:)

if it is the same parts guy I think it is he hasn't lead me astray yet.

I was planning on doing Longs Peak, but work has gotten in the way. The 60 is still on stands in my garage. :-(

The nice thing is I have a company trip to Denver in about 4 weeks!!

How's your build(s) going?

Update-

I got the passenger side axle, seal, hub and new bearing on this weekend and messed with it several times. I had to keep adjusting the adjustment nut after preloading the bearing and still only got it down to 10 lbs on the spring test.....any suggestions?

I had to replace the bearing because the ones I put last year had heat damage. I suspect it was too tight aswell.

The drivers side bearing spring tested out at 7.5 lbs like the FSM indicated.

Thanks!

Where did you get the shovel and Axe bracket on your Spare? And what does it attach to and how?
Thanks much a great upgrade list.

The clamp portion is a: Defender Roof Rack Axe and Shovel mount.

They can be ordered from Off Road Unlimited for $46.00.

I built a small receiver mount that is mounted to my tire carrier and comes out of the center of the spare tire. I then made a insert that bolted to the axe/shovel mount and slid into the receiver ( just like a mini receiver hitch below your bumper) I drilled a hole through both and inserted a receiver hitch lock so that I can secure the Axe/shovel mount and remove when I need to remove the spare.....

I hope that makes sense...I'll see if i have a better picture.

Good luck!
