We finally found the elusive horned lizard. Not to be confused with the horny toad or satisfied frog.

el malpais

El malpais. In spanish, the badland. Around here it refers to the 500+ square miles of lava spewed out ca 1000 years ago by the chain of cinder cones now known as the zuni mts and by the stratovolcano named mt taylor. The us govt thought it was so cool they gave it monument status. So now its called el malpais natl monument. Today we drove out to the big tubes area located at the southern end of el malpais. Lava tubes are formed when the upper, exposed surface of the flow cools and hardens faster than the molten center, which continues to flow beneath. The end result are really cool caves a few centuries later. We explored some today.

Today we visited the big tubes area again and went through the 4 windows cave, named for the openings in the cieling which allow light and rain through creating mossscapes.this is the longest cave we've entered. 10 minutes un foot under gruond into complete darkness. We found a second passage above us where we cuold fele a strong breeze coming from somwhere.

Barry glad you & the boys are having fun!!!

Enjoy the time & adventures!

This is the oldest person ever to sit in my truck. Her name is Louise. She is my 89 year old grandmother and one of the reasons I untertook this trip. She got me started driving a stickshift in the mountains around here when I was 12 in her 1975 datsun pickup. It still sits in her driveway, pretty well preserved.

That not only made me smile, it's heartwarming. My Mom will be 89 on Saturday. She taught me to drive a stick shift on unpaved Mississippi logging roads when I was 12. She said it was a skill I'd need later in life. I think of her every time I fire up the 40 and slam the old beast into gear. Great memories. :)

Barry your in my top 5 cool people I know.
So is Jes but only cause he has a cool wife.;)

Enjoy your summer and keep taking pics.

Wow. Thanks chris. I'm honored to find myself in such elite company. I usually end up on the other kind of lists. I appreciate all the positive feedback from my friends back home. Though I'm reporting a lot of our good times, I face many difficult personal challenges on this trip. Its great to be able to tune in to mud each evening and hear some friendly voices. Here's to all of you
. I'm off drink one now.
