Can confirm, I go with the "this thing broke when I was trying to use it, do you have another one, I still need to finish this job" angle, and they always have more, like they expect these cheap tools to break. Plus, that's what the rental money piling up over months/years is for, to replace them when customers finally win one against the tools.

The joint is held together with a locking taper; the nut is just insurance. It's impact force that separates the taper. You can generate on the order of ten times the force applied during impact, that's why pickle forks used to be the tool to grab when you needed to separate ball joints.

I use a ball joint separator to apply pressure to the ball joint then slip a Pickle Fork between the control arm and joint and they pop right off every time. As with anything that has a 'tapered' press fit....you need to apply a 'shocking' force/action to it....to get it to break loose.

Did mine few weeks ago with a Pickle Fork... but that usually damages the boots. I was replacing the Tie rod end, anyway, so It worked fine.
I suspect this is why they've fallen out of favor. When he front ends were rock solid, beating on them didn't matter. Nowthat every component is pared down to a nubbin to improve mileage, you have to be really careful about taking two parts apart if you want to save either of them.

Yeap, Ironically I'm looking for the "right" tie rod separator tool as well. I have a kit and the one I thought would work, turned out to be too small, but I didn't try the U shaped one I had. Will try fitting the tool again before I purchase one.

The pickle fork is tried and true.. to work, but yes, only when I'm going to replace the boot+grease, or dont plan to reuse the joint.

Must say that's about as fancy-ass of a pickle fork I've ever done laid my eyes on 😍

Well....its a set actually. Can be rotated up to 90° for confined spaces or converted for use in an Air Hammer.
