Well my driving experience in BC has been in the Greater Vancouver Area.

So I will clarify my comment MOST (75%) of GVA drivers suck! The worst I have very seen in Canada. The funny thing is, you would think that they would know how to drive in the rain! Since it rains all the freaking time.

The rest of BC is off the hook...

...well islander's are a different story :D

I was just kidding. :D I agree with you: as a Lower Mainland driver, and as a person who has lived in New York City, we are bad drivers. All it takes is a tiny bit of rain, snow or fog, and all of a sudden we forget how to do shoulder checks, look at mirrors, etc.

aamigga,

I wouldn't buy an Ontario or any eastern Canadian or eastern U.S. car. Like Crusher says, TOO MUCH RUST. I've seen the Japanese 'Cruisers that come in and they DO NOT HAVE ANY RUST AT ALL!! You could eat off the undercarriage (well almost).

I agree with the fact that Lower Mainland drivers are bad but "you ain't seen nuthin yet" Down here in Guatemala everyone turns left from the right lane and right from the left lane and they are all conserving energy because they NEVER use turn signals (half the cars don't even have them!). Buses pick up and drop off folks in any lane they choose! Lane markings, what are they for?? It looks nice but why bother!!
I'm told when the roads were first marked some folks thought they needed to drive with the line down the middle of the car!!!!

After you've driven in Guatemala City anything is easy!!

Nah...we BC drivers are really well-behaved most of the time. It's just that when we see an Ontario plate, we can't resist shoving our bumpers up their ass I guess as a subconscious retribution for the way the federal government has always treated the West. :flipoff2:

Stoney, that made me laugh, thanks..

have to respond on the no rust issue in Alberta , I say it is not true . I bought my cruser in Ab. from a cruiser shop and the cruiser spent all its life in Ab. and it had rust . More than I first thought , but it is a cruiser after all so rust is pretty much normal . Now I have a friend here in NS that also has a cruiser and he was out west and went to look at a freshly imported hj61 with low km and was disgusted at the amount of rust and low quality rust repair on the lower body panels . Needless to say he did not buy it , instead he bought one from the states , rust free , and did the diesel transplant and was $$$$ dollars ahead versus buying an import dtlc.

hey, if it is the HJ61 i remember, he wasn't the only one shocked...
good contacts in Japan are worth their weight in gold... or did i already say that?
as for rust in alberta... yah, we have rust, more so in the last 10 years thanks to the new chemicals they use...

what happened to that hj61 anyways ?

Of course!

I always look to the West Coast to buy vintage (older) vehicles, but the are insanely priced. Why is there a premium on every west coast vehicle? No salt I'm assuming.

There are many BJ and HJ60's for sale in Southern Ontario and on average quite cheaper than in BC / AB. I think it's more hype than anything else tha Ontario trucks are ALWAYS rust buckets. If you look ye shall find.

It is also a lot of hype that AB / BC cars are ALWAYS rust free.

<snip> .

Reviving an old thread whilst doing my importing homework......I just got a real kick out of this comment.

We have rust free cars in BC? I Aint ever been to the center of the universe (and have no desire to), I can only imagine they use more salt than we do given the horrific weather thay have there vs. us here in Lotusland...but still, we have rust free cars in BC? tell that to all my 40 series vehicles plz.

Yeah, I grew up in BC and there were a lot of rust buckets around. Mind you I wasn't in the lower mainland, so we actually got snow. And salt. People say to check the frames on the cruisers from the lower mainland (and island) for rust. The bodies often are pretty, but rusty where you can't see.

I drove through Ontario one winter and they just piled the salt on the road. They sort of have to, and plow the roads a lot. The truckers are not permitted to use tire chains on slippery hills. If it's too slick to drive up, you gotta wait for the salt truck/plow. Or risk a big fat ticket.

Now that I live in Alberta, I see far less rust. In the winter here it is usually too cold for salt to work. So lots of gravel on the road. We don't have (much) rust, but really crappy wind shields.

It's comical there are people who think B.C. vehicles have "less rust." In many cases, rust prone vehicles here are just as rusty as anywhere else. I can remember an old Toyota Celica I drove (1972 model) that was put on a hoist to change an exhaust part. The whole front end of the car cracked. There was, and is, plenty of rust here. It's less of a problem now because vehicles are better protected. Actually, the only reason I didn't buy a landcruiser sooner is because they were so incredibly rust prone here I didn't want to fight that problem. Until I got the HDJ81, which is heavily protected from rust.

I have three examples of 60's and rust. One has very, very little and is a local Vancouver rig. It was well maintained and I don't think it ever saw a logging road.

The second is a Prince George truck, all the usual LC rust, I'm still debating on how to deal (hide) with it.

The thrid is an Ontario truck which the body is completely rusted. Even rust high up on the door panels, around the door handles, back tailgate is just about gone.

I haven't lived in Ontario but I grew up in the Maritimes and rust is a major issue, much moreso than the west coast. Like my bro said upon seeing my vehicles; Wow, you can actually turn bolts under your vehicle, back east you would just grab the torch.

HST is next !!! From our Dictator / DWI master..

Here is your import that is known that they must replace if used too 100k or time of 8- 12 years , depends on area of Japan used.

TACN :: Toyota Landcruiser HJ60

ummm, wrong. that engine (in the link) had other issues attack it. that is NOT a typical LC engine condition in ANY country.
there is no forced engine replacement in Japan.
there is no forced vehicle replacement in Japan.

both are wives tales told by engine importers to convince unsuspecting buyers of the quality of engine they are buying. in reality, the engines usually sold by engine importers are bought by the container load out of wrecked vehicles in Japan with high mileage. the sucker purchaser then gets stuck with an unknown mileage engine in unknown condition.

sorry, you have been had.

True, true. There is nothing mandatory about the motor situation in japan, but I've heard that there are financial incentives via the government to replace motors at low mileage, similar to the idiot C.A.R.S. program here in the US. It has nothing to do with emissions, or maintenance, it's all about keeping the wheels of industry rolling.

If it were me, I'd much rather drive a vehicle that's fully paid for and mine, and rebuild the engine periodically, than to be perpetually in hoc for a new car every couple years. Here in the 'States the Fed just wants us all to be as horribly in debt as they are so they don't feel as bad about being 6 trillion dollars in the hole.

Anyway, even if the donor motor in question had only been driven once a week on sundays had 300km on it, and was a half-cut, I'd still rebuild it before putting it into my rig. Better safe than sorry.

Oh, and by the way that HJ60 in the link: HOLY HELL! Use motor oil, not roofing tar!
