Looks like the Speed Queens ratings have taken a nose dive in the last year. This guy's reviews seem pretty thorough and this old school Maytag model may win me over - manual controls, commercial construction, 5 year in house parts replacement warranty. #MVWP575G

The clothes washer finally kicked the bucket last night and wouldn't drain or spin. What's e'rybody's favorite right now?
Just had that same thing happen to our washer. $21 lid switch for the win. Google common problems before replacing. Like others have said, the older models are WAY better built than the new replacements.

Prolly shouldn't jinx ours, but we bought it (Maytag) in 1997, and this is the first thing I've EVER had to do to it.....................

Has anyone had any luck with Pure Swine Inverters?

I was hoping Redarc had a 110 but they don’t.

I want a good one maybe 2000W. No real need but be nice to have if needed.

Not familiar with Pure “Swine” Inverters, Pure Sine maybe? Only thing I can say is when it comes to Inverters they are like a car Audio amplifier, you get what you pay for. The cheaper ones are overrated as far as what they claim they can put out. For instance an inexpensive one that claims it will do 2000w is only capable of doing 600-1000w on its best day. As with any power hungry electronic you have to be able to feed it the power in order to make power. If it’s actually capable of doing 2000w continuous you will need at minimum 0ga to feed it and will have to run both power and ground to it from the battery due to high current demand. Not able to chassis ground Inverters. A good rule of thumb when shopping is to see what fuses are on the Inverters and multiply that by ten and that will give you a rough estimate as far as what the unit is capable of producing. For instance, if it has 4 25A fuses that is 100A total which should be able to produce 1000w continuous. This calculation is not exact and doesn’t take into consideration efficiency or actual input voltage. Just gives you a rough idea when comparing different models from different companies.

I think the Pure Swine inverter turns pork into bacon, but I could be wrong.

To circle back on my story. It was indeed something quick to trace and fix. Thanks @dnp for the encouragement to DIY.

It was the lid safety switch. I just bypassed it with a jumper lead at the harness plug. Easy-peasy.

While it was down I decided to thoroughly clean the tub and spindle. A cycle of diluted vinegar and a cycle of diluted bleach in the tub. All the spindle parts got a hand scrubbing. Once I pulled the single bolt from the top of the drive shaft, I discovered the clutch mechanism was completely disintegrated. "Dog Agits" are available from Amazon for $4. Also replaced the non stainless hardware in the control panel brackets with SS. One of them was so bad I had to drill it out.

All is right again...it is an 80 Series, after all.

The black bits that engage the teeth are the dog agits.

Started with the washing machine being off balance. Figured it wasn’t level after moving it back in the house. Boy was I wrong. Had a good idea that the Spider/Spindle that holds the drum may be cracked, according to my google-fu. So I order every part relating to the spindle, bolts, gaskets, shocks etc as well as a new drain pump as I have been replacing them about once a year for the past 4 years. Roughly $350 in parts. Parts came in today, on an off day from the shop. I have succeeded in turning my laundry room and driveway into an appliance repair horror story. There are parts everywhere not to mention random spots of blood on the new floors from cutting myself and not knowing. The washer is apart and spider/spindle is definitely broken. Open the box with the new part and the spindle looks nothing like the broken one I just removed. All parts were ordered for my specific Model Number and were verified with the serial number. Turns out I have the “Early” motor design and the parts sent are correct but will require purchasing a new motor assembly in order to use it. How much is this “later” motor for a washer that I bought in 2007, you may ask...$332.74...f-that. This one is going in the trash and it’s time to buy a replacement. If I would of known there was a chance of having the mysterious “Early” motor I would of bought a new one last week when I ordered all the parts. Time to go negotiate a deal on a new pos that will eventually fail and require replacement in the future.

Go old school and ditch front load.... old cheap ones work great and last. Plus when does die, lower cost of ownership

Apparently times have changed and one cannot go out and buy a washing machine anymore. All of your big box stores are simply “Showrooms” now and do not have anything but the microscopic useless for a family of 5, soon to be 6, garbage without a name. You simply go to the store and pick out what you want and in 7-10 days it will arrive at your house. Apparently all household appliances require background checks and waiting periods of 7-10 days as the sales rep at Home Depo refused to sell me a scratch and dent that they had in the middle of the isle, with a Reduced Price Tag, saying that it too would have to be delivered in 7-10 days and I was not allowed to take it with me. If a washing machine is in such demand and requires a wait period I decided to check out a place that specializes in scratch and dent. Surely they would sell me one on the spot. Turns out this particular scratch and dent chain feeds on people with terrible credit who are not aware of how much appliances cost and will sign their name to anything and make monthly sometimes weekly payments. The dented/damaged units they had looked like they literally fell off a truck and were priced 20-25% more than a new undamaged unit with a 7-10 day waiting period. Even when I offered to pay cash they would not discount their grossly inflated price so again I walked out of yet another store empty handed. On the verge of just stopping by wal mart and buying everyone in the house enough clothes to make it through the 7-10 day waiting period, I decided to stop by Lowe’s as a last ditch effort before buying new clothes. Apparently they are having a sale where washers are 35% off. After getting into a slight disagreement over the differences between the color Platinum and Champagne, it was time to ask the question that you would ask your dope dealer if you wanted more product than usual, but in this case it was can I take this washer home today and avoid the 7-10 day waiting period? After checking stock to see if one was available and once again the argument between the difference of Platinum and Champagne arose. He was claiming that Platinum was a goldish color with a hint of pink, let’s call it strawberry wine for arguments sake, Platinum has the appearance of a darker than normal stainless steel. After pulling up model numbers on Lowe’s.com while standing infront of the so called “dealer”, to verify what is actually platinum, I was actually given the ok to purchase said machine in Platinum. Now to figure out how to get it home. FYI, a Samsung front loader will fit in the back of a 100. Now to get to the house and set it up.

Haha! They don't sell them in boxes anymore?

Apparently not. This one came on a styrofoam pallet with styrofoam sides and top. Then the entire styrofoam crate was shrink wrapped. No cardboard box, it must be bad for the sea lions but non biodegradable expanded polystyrene foam must be their new food of choice.

Went through the same hell almost exactly 5 years ago...by the way, I ended up with two drums as a result of that fiasco. I might still have the second one in the attic if you want to try it.

Poor design that essentially submerges pot metal in caustic cleaning solution. F these modern day pieces of garbage...#replacedontrepair

Build a fire pit with the stainless drum.
