Anyone swap in a 2020-2023 steering wheel into a 2010-2019 (specifically 2010-2013) GX460?

As the thread title says, anyone make this swap yet? I'm curious about the updated wiring layout the 2020-2023 wheel has. I'm definitely going to build a custom connector to make sure my functions work on the newer wheel controls.

I've bought a 2020-2023 steering wheel and it's being shipped shortly so I've got some time to do some research.

Im swapping my 2022 (just full leather vs wood inserts) once the new wheel shows up in a few days. Be happy to get you any info I can while im in there.

I would just assume you might need a new clock spring if you have less functions than the new wheel, such a heat.

On the gram, I saw a guy swap what I think is a very new wheel into the 10-19 and the stuff seemed to work still

Wish I knew what steering wheel he used to replace it with before I bought the 2020 steering wheel. The main thing I want is a 3 spoke design. Too late now, I'll just have to make it work.

Also I don't have IG so I cannot read the comments.

You should be able to tell if it will work (from a wiring/harness perspective) using the GX460 FSM for your 2010 as and a 2020+ wheel. It should list the connector pinouts for the steering wheel and the clockspring. I did this when seeing if a SpeedoHealer will work for a GX460 - the FSMs are kind of a pain to navigate, but it's doable. If the connectors and pinouts are identical, it will probably work, unless there is something different from a CANBUS perspective.

You an also check the clock spring part number and see if it changed year-by-year. But, even if the clockspring itself and it's connectors are the same, that does not mean that the pins in the connectors did not change.

When you get your new full leather steering wheel, let us know if the steering wheel heater works on the entire diameter of the wheel.
I don't use it often, but when I do use the steering wheel heater, it only heats on the leather sides and not the wood. Wish it did the entire wheel.

The one I bought is aftermarket and is supposed to be 360 heat, so I sure hope it does lol.

Even the full leather OEM versions such as the ones that can come on a GS, RX, ect are only side heat too :(
Main reason I jumped on the aftermarket train, besides not loving the wood wheel compared to leather.

Where can I get the FSM? Maybe I'll ask Grok... Lol

I'm going to build a custom connector harness to connect the two factory connectors. But I gotta find the other end connectors. A diagram would really help. I really don't want to cut the factory harness.

Someone posted a link to one earlier, but normally you need to download them via a short subscription to Toyota TIS. It's $30 for 2 days. If you get one I'd love a FSM for a 2007 GX470....the one i have is for a 2005 :).

If you download them are they time locked or are they now yours and fully accessible after the short term subscription ends?

Not sure. The ones floating around on the web are an unlocked PDF FSM for a GX470 and a file that opens thru a web browser for a GX460. The GX470 FSM has been very, very useful for working on my rig, but I've just been using the 2005 FSM published on GXOR.

FSMs here

2020+

Side note … Driver Support Package (Radar Cruise) gear all got put on standard ‘20+ so you will have those extra buttons

If the one you are getting heated? IIRC… heating on ‘20+ is cooler than ‘10-‘19 models

Do you have a link to the wheel you purchased?
The only reason I like the wood is that the faux leather wrap after time (less than 10 years?) starts peeling and rubbing thin. So far the wood section of my wheel has held up great, but as I've noted above, just no heat on top and bottom.

I bought it from a guy who never installed it on the Lexus forums. I am not sure where he got it though, sadly.
I suppose I will also have the other full leather OEM Fsport wheel he is sending along with it, but it only has normal side heat.

I'm not sure. Here's the donor VIN:

JTJAM7BX7L5253414

It’s from a premium so should be non-heated
10-4. Kinda wanted a heated wheel but it's ok. I've dealt with not having one long enough to get used to it. 😁

Well that was pretty simple. I spent an hour or so on it. If I did it again, probably a 20 min. job.

I did not know the whole button assembly simply prys and pops off once you take out the two retaining screws.
I was sitting there trying to get the rear plastic shroud off forever, but once the button part pops off, there is a screw at the bottom.

I love the continuous wrap, vs. wood, and 360 degree heat seems decent!

So that wheel from an RX? Was your harness plug and play with the new wheel?

I think it’s a generic RX/GX/GS ect (any with same shape)

The heat connection came with 4 wires that had harness pins crimped on. And to my delight a free female plug that you slide those pins into. I just matched up what the GX had and plugged it in.

Rest of it just transferred to new wheel. CC stalk, lane departure vibrator, and the buttons and back plastic. The heater controller is attached to the back plastic.

I think it’s always the case that only the heating element wires go with the wheel frame.

What year GX460 do you have? I wonder if the connectors, wiring, or both themselves changed between 2010-2013 and 2014-2023? I guess I'll find out. I'm almost certain it won't be plug and play for my 2010.
