Well I got these lights tonight....they seem half way decent.....heavy plastic that is for sure. The lens surprised me....made of a heavy glass. Not plugged them in yet but I think they are going to be bright as hell. The thing with them being not dot approved should not be a issue....They do not give a rats ass i know.:D

I've been running Hella H4 E-code headlights for several years, never had a problem. They are sooo much better light pattern than the DOT sealed beams. I would be shocked if anybody would hassle you for them, but I guess it's possible. It's all about not driving like a jerk. If you drive like an idiot, then you deserve to get flagrant tickets thrown at you.

What I think is inappropriate is running high wattage bulbs on the low-beam side, especially on a lifted vehicle. It's annoying and yeah you should get a ticket, as it causes a distraction. I run 55W lows (DOT standard), but 100W high beam bulbs, very bright in high-beam but I'm careful where I use them.

Upgrading the wiring with a custom harness is more important, it makes a huge difference. I made my own.

You can put one MILLION watt bulbs in there if you want, but until you upgrade the pathetic stock wiring, they're not gonna get any better.

If I am getting proper voltage what is the purpose of up- grading? Not being a smart@#$...don't get me wrong. The wiring in this rig is in great shape. I am getting proper voltages on low and high beam. I used 3 different meters just to be sure. One of them was a dc amp probe.quote=KLF;3978838]You can put one MILLION watt bulbs in there if you want, but until you upgrade the pathetic stock wiring, they're not gonna get any better.[/quote]

Funny...just checked they was only 55 watts....I went and bought 100 just a second ago.

Is this the high beam or low beam wattage?

There are 2 reasons to upgrade the harness.

1. You are not getting the right voltage to the headlights.

2. To eliminate troubles with the combination switch in the steering column.

The combination switch runs all of the power for the lights through a set of contact points similar to the ones used in the old style points distributor. These points get burned and pitted causing intermittent problems with the lights. By stepping up to a higher wattage bulb, you will be increasing the likely hood of the pitting and burning of these points. This will cause lighting problems for you down the road.

By installing the harness upgrade, you reduce the power that runs through the combination switch and eliminate the burning and pitting troubles.

I would recommend that you upgrade your harness for your lights to better handle the higher wattage bulbs.

I checked on the price of the combination switch when mine was giving me trouble and Toyota wanted $425.00 for one.

I found my receipt on my ebay lights. Its no wonder why I think they are bright, and clear. I ordered the 100/90w white light bulbs.

Also, oddly enough, I have never been flashed for too bright of headlights. This is both in my Built 4Runner, and stock '86 mini.
But I do get flashed in my 100% bone stock Volvo sedan on a regular basis.

I have a feeling despite the higher wattage bulb, they produce the same Lumens as a higher quality 60/50w bulb.

Sorry guys my legs have been giving me a rough time......good advice from everyone . I totally forgot about the switch upgrade. I ordered 90 low beam 100 high highbeam also....the diffrence is huge and damn pleasant.
