Recently purchased a pre owned land cruiser and found this mounted by the gas and hood release. Anybody know what it is?

Looks like a Dealer installed “alarm”. Either to help protect vehicle while in their possession or to try to sell it to you. If not sold, they disconnect it, but leave the wiring “rats nest” behind. It’s not uncommon, but not factory.

I really don't understand these posts. These situations where there is some random switch that could do nearly anything... How is someone from afar on the internet going to know? Trace the wires from the switch to where they terminate and figure out what they do.

Pull it off and see if there's a model number on the back of the device. Punch that into Google and see what you find.

I had one similar on mine, same shape, connectors and mounting location. It was flashing a blue light. Traced the wiring down in to the kick panel and found a couple of the wires terminated into an add-a-fuse, other wires were cut and not terminated. I assumed an aftermarket device or dealer installed alarm like @619TOY mentioned and I ripped it out.

When I replaced my amplifier I was in the console and redid the rear seat power (added by precious owner) there was a power tap back there too, undid that as well.

A few weeks later I thought I'd turn on my rarely used radar detector. Yep, found out what that power tap was for. Sigh.

To be fair it was worth a shot to see if any of us have seen something similar.

It is a dealer-installed immobilizer to prevent theft from lots. The wiring taps into several signal lines and interrupts a single ignition line. One was installed on my used 2018. I was uncomfortable having an immobilizer on my vehicle even with dealership assurance that it was "deactivated." I had to remove the dash panels under the steering wheel to cleanly remove everything, but the total removal time was only an hour or so.

Press the buttons to see what happens. Maybe it will summon the mother ship.

Open sunroof before pushing button—just in case it’s a piloteject button... ;)
