Hey fellers, so it looks like maybe i’m needing a new alternator… i’m finding this hunt for a replacement a little confusing with different part numbers, what’s available these days and what crosses over from 60 series — I’m really wanting to stick with the stock configuration, plug and play,
happy to use an upgraded alternator as long as i don’t need to change wiring harness stuff.

Any good options you guys have been happy with & would recommend? I have to find something pretty quickly.

Is there anyone in your area that can rebuild it? I ask because I bought a Bosch direct replacement and the lights would get brighter then duller as the voltage regulator would kick in. I ended up having a local company rebuild my OEM alternator it and it was back to normal and working well. some things are better OEM.

GM one wire

I’m looking into the prospect of a local rebuild — but as an alternative has anyone had luck with an auto store replacement or a dependable unit from a vendor on here? I have reached out to @cruisermatt and dropped a message with @orangefj45 is there someone else I should be asking? City Racer maybe? I’m not familiar with a GM one wire, @Russelld53 is there any more info you have on that. Thanks ALL!!

Do a search on the aforementioned GM one wire. Inexpensive, truly just one wire from alt to battery post. Ditch the regulator. I have a GM one wire on my inboard boat, my FJ 55, My ford flathead six, my ford flathead V8, my tractor, a cummins diesel powered '59 ford, and probably a few more. Some types need you to quickly blip the throttle to 1300 rpm to start the charging, but that happens automatically. One last reason is you can be rolling through East Podunk on a trip and pick up a replacement at any parts store. Here's one I have used before.

Before we start the China thing, let me say that in 1885 when I was 32 and starting my woodworking business I gambled on buying a shopful of Chinese machinery from the then new Grizzly Tools. It was 20 years of 50 hr weeks before my first repair and some of these machines are still in use today. End of rant. Thanks for listening to this old man.

I run a gm alt with my sbc. My setup required a little rewiring. I use 3 wires with an idiot light. You can checkout Mad electricals website for their tutorials. Ive never purchased anything from them. I've heard Coolerman might offer a small harness for internally regulated fj60 alts. In the past big box auto parts stores offered lifetime free replacement on alternators and starters if there's a failure. I dont know if they still do that.

I like the concept of a 100+A one wire and monitor the voltage instead of Amps. Some time back someone here had a place in Kansas? re do their alternator. I think it was one with a vac pump too. Anyway they got it back quickly and it worked for a good price.

Google and read the reviews. I also like to email folks and see if I get a timely response - my thought is if they don't respond quickly looking for business; then good luck getting any help from them if stuff goes south.

I'm running this on the 1979. It was timely delivery and happy with the results.

@wimberosa thank you for the input, does that wire dongle thing hanging out of the alternator plug into the factory green plug?
Thats a good question. The pic doesn't quite look like what I got. I did not quite realize I already had an fj60 alternator I was replacing. Mine had a GM reman sticker on it and I thought it was some GM alternator....but it was actually an fj60 alternator I already had. I had a connector that looked like the pic below (the two prong connector i think you are asking about). The alternator I received (within the last 3 months) had this type connector on it. Can't promise what happens now...but I understand these guys are shipping out a LOT of these alternators. Really the only thing going on here is that there is one wire signalling ignition (IGN) and anything else can pretty much be ignored in that plug. You can just send them a query. They were pretty responsive when I had a very different question.

Hi, I've done both. I run the fj60 60 amp on the fj40 and the gm one wire on the pig. both work well. the fj60 was a drop in with the wiring kit from coolerman (great vendor to work with, BTW). the GM one wire (CS144) required a wire to the pos term with a fuse. IIRC, I had to make sure the right width pulley was included in the gm alt. It seems to depend on how much amp you need and what your harness can handle. the fj60 60 amp alt from rockauto seems to be the cheapest to get.

have a good one, ty

I am having Doug at D&D Auto Electric in Denver (Wheat Ridge) rebuild the early 80’s alternator on my Toyota Forklift 303 423-6522. Old school shop with an old school operator. I was referred via Rising Sun club website. I don’t think they have a website and he doesn’t take credit cards! Dropped off last Thursday and he just called that it’s ready, total just under $150. I’ve also converted to GM 1 wire from early generator (on a 1962) as well. Good Luck either way.

There are almost no sources of the reman factory 55 amp alternators. I see some 'listed' on ebay, but they're almost always the 10 o'clock version (as viewed from the rear of the alt) and USA spec take the 2 o'clock version. I'm told even cores have dried up because people hang on to them.

If you want to keep the factory ND alt best to get it rebuilt by a quality rebuilder. I shipped mine to this place a few months ago. Good people and they were recommended by a Land Cruiser shop. I asked for Japanese bearings on the rebuild and a new Voltage Regulator.

About $190 for the rebuild + shipping (they paid for the return).
