Any 200 series owners considering a 2017 Ford Raptor?

I briefly considered the raptor, lot's to like and the interior is a huge step forward, plus some extra HP is avail with some tuning.... but the premiums the local dealers wanted and price on a loaded rig killed it.... but debating picking up a used Raptor for my GF as they will finally start to moderate ..... and have started to drop here already in TXbased on issues with the oil biz ....

So mark, you are saying that you may have been drunk at the time of your little mishap?

Haha! No. I don't drink at all.
But that IS why I have never consumed alcohol...because I might do something stooooopid...
Obviously my strategy idn't help, as I STILL fell off the dang truck!

@Markuson -Thanks and that's interesting to hear. So even with my third row seats in the vehicle I should be able to fit sheets of plywood?

I think at least part of my concern is scratching/damaging the inside of the truck-leather, headliner, etc. I don't mind carrying around tools and recovery gear because they are stowed in containers, but I feel like I'd be playing a giant game of operation if I start hauling things like wood inside. That light gray headliner is the worst!

Maybe I will give it a go today and see how it works out. Still want a truck though!

Oh...! Not with third row seats... If you have drawers...you can't have third row seats. It's the drawers level that matches up with the 2nd row seats to make a longer cargo area. I'm sorry if I made that sound otherwise...

We bought a 17 Tacoma PRO. Like it, but its underpowered. I have been lusting after the Raptor since the 6.2L was released. Should have bought one then.

I have reading some not very flattering things about the 3.5L Ecoboost on the Expedition forums.

Maybe end of next year, we get rid of our Taco Pro and get the Raptor.

I've been intrigued by the Ford Raptor since it was rolled out a few years back. Now, the 2017 looks even more badass. I want one!

This is, of course, putting on blinders to the fact that the 3.5 ecoboost that may not be the most reliable powerplant of all time, there's a new 10 speed transmission that I'm guessing will have problems, and who knows what other quality control problems that I just don't worry about with my LC. Maybe someone who has owned a few Fords can chime in as to quality control. My experience with friends and family with newer Fords (including the first gen ecoboost F-150) has been that they were all disappointed with quality past 50k miles.

I would never get rid of my 200, so maybe when my wife's lease is up on her minivan I can convince her to drive the Canyonero as a daily driver and I can sneak a truck into the rotation. Unlikely probably, she loves her van...

I sure do miss having a truck sometimes.

Is anyone else lusting after this 2017 Raptor like me?

Ive liked the Raptor ever since it came out. It was a huge success for Ford and they initially couldn't keep up with demand. The US Border Patrol even bought a bunch of them to use. It kind of created its own niche; Ram now has the Rebel, but its just cosmetic. Chevy may have something comparable now, too.

The earlier Raptors with the all-motor 6.2L V8 is the only Raptor I would want though. I was disappointed to hear the new ones have a twin turbo EcoBoost, I wouldn't own one of those. But considering it has 12" of suspension travel, 411 HP, stock 35s with a rear locker and 4.10s, well that all sounds pretty sweet to me for a stock truck. In 2012 they changed the open front diff to a limited slip, so Id take a 2012-16 Crew Cab with the 6.2L in white. Its just a really unique truck. I think for some vehicles, the rewarding driving experience and performance just outweigh any reliability issues.

As far as Ford, Id rank them ahead of both Chevy and Dodge as far as reliability but below Toyota, in general. However, the Ford Excursion is the 3rd most reliable full-size SUV behind the LC and the Sequoia, according to the Long Term Reliability Index. This index is often cited around here because the LC scored a perfect 100. Ive owned a 2002 Excursion Limited 4x4 with the 7.3L PowerStroke Diesel for about 6 years now, have put 100k miles on it, and its been the most reliable vehicle Ive ever owned, and Ive owned a lot of Cruisers. Im not one of those die hard Ford fans by any means, but I am a die-hard Cruiser nut. That being said, I would actually put a 7.3L Excursion's reliability up against an LC any day. The Excursion was maybe an anomaly for Ford; just a really over-engineered SUV as far as toughness, then you put in one of the best diesel engines of all time and you have a great package.

I have been thinking of replacing one of our LC/LX for a Suburban/Expedition EL, as I am tired of putting a roof box. I want 3 row seating + luggage space.

The Excursion Diesel used resale value bears out what you are saying. Man those are bulletproof.

I was reading about all the problems with the 5.3L Suburban motors, since they added the cylinder deactivation.

I wish Toyota would make an updated sequoia to compete with the Suburban/Expedition EL.

Even the QX80 has no luggage space after the third row.

i've heard about the excursion being built like a tank... but wow! that thing is the size of a tank too.

And they are a nice tow rig.

I've always said that if there were a minivan that could legitimately tow 5,000 or more pounds with AWD it would be a game-changer. Just a little "meaner" of a minivan, keeping all the great minivan-exclusive functionality (low load floor, sliding doors, etc.) and I would be first in line to get one. I don't think most people need to tow more than 5,000 pounds (Honda's research reached the same conclusion when they were designing the new Ridgeline.)

Hell, I took the back seats out of my wife's Sienna today and the cargo space is over 8'x4' and the low floor and high ceiling really opens up what you could carry in there.

It's disappointing to keep hearing about how shoddy Ford's quality appears to be. But I do agree with @89cruiserfj62 that sometimes the overall experience can outweigh some quality control concerns. Knowing that Ford is going to sell every Raptor they make, and knowing how the truck is marketed as a stock vehicle that can run Baja, I simply have to believe they tested it fairly extensively. I'm definitely going to keep an eye on the Raptor and see how the early adopter's trucks hold up.

How about this?

Yea I'd wait to get one, Ford quality sucks so bad that they have a parking lot full of 17000 Raptors waiting to be fixed!

Yeah I looked into what texas says and it seems there are a lot of new F150s and Raptors that are being held back for some sort of "retrofit", who knows what that could be. I found some inter web rumors that there was a problem with either the front or rear differential in the new Raptor.

Don't forget Dodge Power Wagon. It has a much longer history than the raptor and seems to be the more versatile off roading vehicle bone stock. The raptor is shiny and pretty, the "it" "look at me" truck, but the Power Wagon looks good and seems more capable from the videos I've seen bone stock. That's saying a lot for that truck.

Good point, I forgot about that one. It would probably perform better at climbing and certain types of off road, but the Raptor would excel at high speed off road I think. Personally, I think that Power Wagon is heinous, but love the looks of the Raptor.

These are cool, but in looking at all the other vans out there, they seem incredibly austere compared to a well-equipped "typical minivans" from Toyota and Honda. Heated seats, heated steering wheel, 20" bluray DVD player, adaptive cruise, and on and on--seems like those big vans including the METRIS and the Nissan NV are more utility/work vans vs. luxury family vans. Yeah I'm spoiled, but there's no turning back now!
