Another poor mpg thread.

Well, after new cats, o2 sensor, knock sensors and fuel filter I do have more power. Most notable is the low end power increase at partial throttle. It also pulls harder on the high end. Mileage is also up as a result. I'm now just over 14mpg in mixed driving.

guys..... the official Toyota mpg ratings are 12/14 cty/hwy and these official ratings are usually over optimistic....so please allow me to be extremely skeptical when I hear anything above 13 mpg combined or over 11 mpg city...
So for anybody with mpg over 12 mpg I would strongly suggest revisit the math or maybe go take a look under the bonnet and make sure that your neighbor didn't dropped his civic engine in your Land Cruiser van.....

lol, official ratings. They are averages based on a set of parameters to give an idea of mileage. People got above and blow manufacturers ratings all the time. Now factor in most of us are not running stock vehicles which affect the mileage in both directions. My 96 bronco running a 351 and 35" tires averages 14 to 16 on the highway. How you drive a vehicle also affects the mileage.
 
I've never heard anybody with any vehicle being able to match the official mpg ratings.....kind of ...ever....
When the manufacturers are calculating the mpg they are taking into consideration the ideal conditions (roads, weather, engine, vehicle loads and so on...)... In reality the vehicle almost never finds itself in ideal conditions....so the real mpg are usually 10-15% lower that the official ratings (manufacturer and government)...
Please remember Hyundai and Kia case with their gross misrepresentation of the fuel consumption.....

Myself and all my friends and acquaintances with all my previous and actual vehicles (1 ford, 2 volvo, 3 toyotas - one of them brand new, 2 subarus - one of them brand new, 1 mazda, 1 LX450) I could never get the official mpg rating no mater what I did (short of replicating the ideal condition - perfect weather / no wind, super-inflated tires, flat roads/hwy, new-ish vehicle, completely empty vehicle apart of the driver, no AC or lights, with speeds no more than 55 mph.....)

Let's face it the Land Cruiser Van has lots of qualities and the fuel consumption is definitely not one of them....let's praise it for what it is....and leave fuel consumption for some other vehicles.....

Really? Never heard or chose to ignore? How many people posted their mileage above what you are expecting?
 
I can predictably get 16l/100km (14.7 MP 'US' gal.) I use my cruise control religiously and hold it at 100kph I also ride on Michelin LTX tires properly inflated...
 
don't get me wrong...but please allow me to be extremely skeptical of your 16l/100km (14.7 mpg) .... as I said I would definitely revisit the math.....or please enlighten us all how do you manage that...(running a diesel swap engine in your car wouldn't count....!!!!????)...
 
Here is my data. The 12.6mpg was mountain wheeling in snow. I correct for over sized tires by multiplying miles by 1.06.

Concerns about mileage in an 80 is not about the cost. We all know LC's are money pits. It is about fuel management, the better the mileage the further we can go back country while carrying less fuel. 1 mpg change from 10 to 11 is not the same as from 20 to 21. 1mpg at 10 is 10% increase while 1mpg change at 20 is 5%. I'm most concerned with my offroad mpg which is in the single digits. Once I regear I should be able to get that up considerably.

My concern about fuel economy isn't about $$ but about making sure my truck is running as well as possible. Or operating as efficiently as possible.

This isn't a debate. @paladek Go eat a snickers and calm the f$&@ down.
 
welll......what can I say....be happy and I have to confess I'm kind of jealous....I've owned the LX450 SC for almost two years now and I bought it with some codes that I knew it does affect the mpg so I didn't bother keeping the track of the consumption until I get the codes fixed but I knew it was horrible, absolutely horrible.., however after fixing the codes and doing all the long overdue maintenance (something that PO didn't care to do...!!! spark plugs, wires, caps, rotor, cleaning the injectors, all hoses and thermostat including the heating valve..., all new EGR components, ), the engine (the whole power train...) works like a charm, smooth and quiet...I had high hopes that I would feel some relieve at the pumps....Hopes in vain......maybe just a bit but I still cannot get more than 320km-330km for a fill of 78 to 82 l premium gas....!!!!???? I verified this many times...you do the math but that's about just a bit over 11 mpg (or 28l/100km) and I just don't think the OEM TRD SC would be the difference to 15mpg....As I said the engine/power train works really well, no codes, I even removed the third row seats....I do have the 295/16 KO2 on OME 2.5 lift....And for me it just doesn't seems to make any differences cty vs hwy ...maybe 1mpg ...if that.....
At the moment I'm not driving it too much I'm using my Celica AWD turbo as my DD and thinking of selling the stupid LX450 junk.....
 
I totally agree with the previous statement about the range....Indeed, anytime I dare to go off road I carry two jerrycans of premium fuel and plan very carefully my route so I'm in striking distance of fuel stations....really ridiculous ... this really is the biggest limitation....this and the fact it is a 20+ years junk....

Well not sure how to answer the question ... because I can certainly get lower mileage around town ... but highway at a steady 100kph on cruise (which is about 98+kph on the GPS) I get pretty regularly 16l/100km with 32psi in the Michelin LTX (no oversize knobby tires!) I use only synthetic oil (now Mobil 1 5W-30) I have a Borla exhaust and have the rear seats stored in the basement, no roof rack etc. AND I would be happier if I got better mileage! I did the head gasket about 8-9k miles ago .. clean plugs, airfilter, and a new water pump, fan coupler and belts etc about 15k miles ago. I use synthetic grease on all the driveline fittings religiously and moly fortified 'CAT' approved grease in the Birfields .... BUT IF you are using a Supercharger I would think just the parasitic drag on your engine would cost some economy.... although never had a supercharger to validate that asssumption
 
sure...why not.....? not kidding now....I have already some interested parties, if that doesn't go thru I will be offering it to the mud community (with detailed pics and logs of what I've done to it so far...) I just want to limit my losses and forget about this...as soon as I can....
