If they smog test diesels... wouldn't passing it as be as easy as running bio-diesel???? sucks that you have to pay money for something as lame as that

It does suck, they put it on a dyno, run it up and check for opacity and to make sure all of the smog stuff is present. Because miy PSD is a 6spd/275 hp it came with a catalytic converter. Sorry for the thread hi-jack.

I bought it, then sold it to a buddy locally. He sold it to a fella in Florida, where it has resided for the last 1.5 years or so. The owner is a mudder, but I dont know his handle. DaveGonz does though, maybe he will chime in

5 years and several owners later, how about some driving impressions of the 4BT in an 80.

I have been daily driving mine for about 2.5 years and still working out bugs so it has been a pain in the ass. The engine literally shakes things loose all the time.

If it is tuned well it feels better than a new 6.1 V8 IMO. I used to hate seeing steep hills, now they make me smile.

Hey guys I am the current owner. Its running great. Does bring out the rattles and checks tightness of bolts pretty thoroughly. I swapped in a ranger overdrive/h42 but otherwise no big changes. Get 20 mpg and with a little added sound dampening Its not bad on the highway. I love it. Happy to answer any questions!

Is it a pain to maintain, and do you find you have to continually tweak it like Jason has mentioning above?
Any other bonuses or pitfalls not mentioned before?

Now that this conversion is becoming more common I think the power question has been settled.

If anyone has any lingering doubt do a u tube search for "4bt", they are being put in everything from Camaro dragsters to full sized pickups!

I have to say I am intrigued by this conversion, sounds like the most practical diesel conversion out there.

Are you guys with the 4bt swap running electric fans for cooling or what? I know most of this thread is fairly old..

What a sweet setup, what kind of MPG are you getting with the 4BT? I was thinking of doing the 1HDT conversion, but the cost are adding up fast. The 4BT is my next option. Who did the work, the swap looks done extremely professional. What kind of fabrication did you have done or did you do to sit the motor? Can you post pictures of the motor mounts, or any fabrication. Looks extremely good. I wonder what I would need to run the stock automatic Transmission from toyota.

some how i have missed most of these posts but just got a update email. anyone interested in this mod feel free to PM me about it. It has been a fun project for me but besides the motor, just about everything involving the swap has failed. vibration does a lot of damage over time.

Details? axles? hinges and door latches?

the big items were transmission (700r4-replaced with ranger splitter h42/splitcase which has held up). motor mounts, both the mounts and the welded mounting points. 700r4 trans xmember. exhaust system at multiple rub points. a/c rubbed on hood causing multiple problems and the mounting plate failed, and in the process caused thermostat housing and alternator bracket failure. the rest of the truck has held up well. the motor itself has needed a rebuilt IP and Vacuum pump, Valve adjustment and the front cover.

have you gotten your 4BT balanced, that should solve alot of your vibration problems becasue i know stock the 4BT was not balanced like the 6bt and used mostly for delivery truck and the such!

This is debatable.. do a search, yes it can be balanced and there is a $500 harmonic balancer available but that is mainly for reducing fatigue and issues with the longer crank on the 6bt's. I wouldn't mind trying that or a marine dampener. I think those who have gone through the effort have noticed some difference.. Heavier flywheels help, bumping the RPM..Intercooled motors seem to be a little smoother afaik. It is a 4 cylinder and there are lots of discussions on here and on 4bt forums.. There are so many variations on a swap and the quality/foresight/engineering of the work that can make or break the longevity and drivabilty. I think Boots' build has been very interesting to follow. Gifu (I think) sold his and went with a Toyota drivetrain and would never go back..

Thanks for the response. It is good to see the good and bad of 4bt conversions.
