Again, Thanks for all the great compliments.

This conversion did not cost ME very much as I am an employee of Proffitts Cruisers. It only cost me parts. All in all, I have about $10K in it including the cost of the vehicle. Not too bad really.

This is a great conversion and fits nicely into an 80 or any Cruiser for that matter. Yes, the intercooler fits b/w the AC condensor and the new radiator.

We are in the process of updating our website so check back with us. www.proffittscruisers.com Soon we will have an entire section devoted to the Cummins swap with lots of details and pics.

Also, for those who might be wondering: we modify the lockup on the tranny so it will only lockup in OD.

What do you think the top speed would be? Not that I want to take an 80 over 85mph but will it keep up on the freeway without running out of rpm's?

ok i'll play devil's advocate, why not the 5.9 from a wrecked dodge or even a crate motor. even though the 4 banger slips right in i would prefer a 6 with a bit more modding. ok you can throw those pennies back at me :D

and no i'm not bashing you accomplishment, your installation looks very nice and tidy, and i bet will outlast the truck.

says on their web site that you need at least 4" of lift IIRC...

Ahhh, the old 5.9 question. Search around and see what others say. But, I'll give you my thoughts.

1) The 5.9 is too heavy. I believe that you would have to beefen up your suspension as it is very heavy. And I mean BEEFEN, not just OME heavies. A 4BT is virtually the same weight as a 2F, 3FE, or 1FZFE.

2) The 5.9 is too big.
A) it is 2 cylinders longer than the 4BT. Yes the 4BT fits nicely into the 80 series engine compartment but there is not that much space to play with once you aftermarket intercool it and put your fans in. I have a few inches of space between the fans and the idler pulley. I feel that you could not aftermarket intercool a 6BT in an 80.
B) Yes, the 6BT is a very powerful engine and is great in Dodge 3/4 and 1 ton trucks. But, in an 80 or any Cruiser for that matter, you are not going to have the same pulling power as you would in a pickup. Wheelbase, suspensions, etc come into play with tow vehicles. Just because a 6BT can pull 14K lbs, that does not mean that your Cruiser can too.

The only thing that a 6BT has over a 4BT is cost. It seems that you can get a good used 6BT for less money than a 4BT.

Here is another thought. If a 4BT can push around a 1.25 ton Frito Lay van full of potato chips and snacks, it surely can push around a Land Cruiser. And push it does! I'll be conservative here (first time in my life) and say that the Frito Lay vans loaded weigh about 7,500 lbs. What does an 80 weigh? 5,500 lbs? These 4BT's are meant to work and they perform very well in a Land Cruiser.

I don't mean to bash 6BT's. They are great engines and I would love to have one, but not in a Cruiser. It's not worth the extra effort in my opinion. But, Kudos to those who make it happen.

As far as top speed goes. A 4BT will do 85. I hit 80mph on the way home this evening and my speedo should be way off due to the 35's. That was probably more like high 80's.

I'll get some more pics as soon as I can.

Hey, I think I talked to you on the phone about a 91 swap I want to do (from Boulder). Anyway, I too have some questions. If you remember I was the one telling you I could track down all of my own parts. Anyway.

1-Question #1. Are you ever in Boulder with the truck? I have NEVER been in one with the swap first hand and I would love to talk to you in person and to actually drive in one. If you are touch base with me and I will treat you to lunch or what not.

2-I too will bring up a 6bt. I will not tow with the 80. My question is, why the 4bt and not the 6bt if what I am after is more horsepower then the 4bt. Don't get me wrong, right now I like the 4bt, but I will be running bio-diesel and I just think I may want more horsepower then the 4bt will give me. Once again this is because I have never been in one in person. What does the 4bt do when, lets say, I go up Loveland Pass or the such to do some back country power or mountains overall?

3-If I do go with the 4bt, why should I do the 4bta or the 4bt? If you remember we were talking about maybe using the stock trans too?

4-And last, as mentioned before, what if you got a gutted, 4' Slee lifted rig with the 4bta (or whatever) at time of drop off. I know we said 2k to reserve my spot for next Oct (haha so long away) but what would that put project cost at? And on a side note I think you guys also do paint work too right?

It's been a good year for my stocks :):)

Anyway, touch base with me and I hope to hear back soon.

Can you couple a 4BT to the A442F and retain the rest of the drive train or do you have to swap to the chevy parts?

Dave

Along MoGas' line of questions, is it possible to do the conversion, but leave the full-time transfer case (or use another fulltime case)?

Another excellent job dude!!!

Quick question if you do no mind. What did y'all do to solve the offset differences between the 700R4 torque converter bolt pattern and the flywheel? I was thinking of getting the torque converter tabs moved to match.

Thank you for your help.

back to work!!

Alright Greasecruiser, enough showing off already! Get back to work!

Wave to my truck is sitting in your yard...she's hoping to get a 4bt for x-mas...:bounce:

1. Awesome swap .. congrats .. the engine looks pretty clean as new :D

2. With adapter you use for auto tranny ( if you rneed it ) and wich one to adapt the 700R4 to Cruiser Tcase I thought HF1A . ?

3. I wanna se a video of this Cruiser running please !!!!!!

4. How much boots are you running .. ? and how much CFM are rated your intercooler . ?

83White: Sorry, I am never around the Boulder area. If I do come out your way, I'll look ya up. You can get a lot more power out of the 4BT if you want it. Turn up the injection pump and you get a lot more horses and torque, all at the expense of fuel economy and longevity of the engine. You can do a little or lot of turning up. It all depends on how much power you want.

I don't know about going over any passes in the 80, I have not done it yet. But, in my FJ60 with a 5 speed, I could do 65mph up Vail pass and pass inferior vehicles such as Wranglers and Exploders. The 80 may not do as well as it is a little heavier and has an auto. But, I can always turn up the pump if I want more power.

Call the shop for specific questions about pricing and timing. BTW, you are now looking at November or December of next year.

Yes, you can retain your stock all time 4WD t-case if your 80 is a 91 or 92. If it is newer, we can use one of these t-cases out of a 91-92 for a later model.

Not sure about the A443, I know that we can use the A440 because Advance Adaptors makes this adaptor. I don't believe there is an adaptor for the A443.

As far as the torque convertor goes, you have to weld new tabs onto the wafer ring for the 700R4 torque convertor to work.

Thanks to all those who posted various sites about the 4BT. If anybody is contemplating this swap, do as much research as you can. This specific motor may or may not be for you. I for one, love it.

i don't believe that any state emmision tests diesels.... but some have laws about swapping a diesel into a gas vehicle

Actually, Washoe and Clark Counties (Reno/Las Vegas) in Nevada require diesel smog tests. It really sucks, not even the Peoples Republic of Kalifornia is smogging diesels, but somebody thought it was a good money maker in Nevada.

Jack

If they smog test diesels... wouldn't passing it as be as easy as running bio-diesel???? sucks that you have to pay money for something as lame as that

Ok, my interest is piqued! Having actually read all the posts in this thread, I saw that this engine has been mated to the 80 running gear. Can anyone run through how to mate this the stock 80 transmission and the wireing to get the stock trans to shift right? On the last thread regarding ans LS SBC swap, getting the trans to shift right was the PITA.

Also, what is the starting point for this swap? From a stock 80, what mods must be done to the truck in order for it to accept this engine? What radiator is used to cool the 4BTA, and how is the radiator/intercooler/AC condensor plumbed??

Can we get an in depth write-up with pictures please? I am not asking for someone to come and do this swap for me; but I love I-4 engines and this one is super sweet! And I would love to put this in my 80. Of all the diesel swap I have heard of so far, this one seems the most do-able and cost effective.
Check out our new website soon. www.proffittscruisers.com

As mentioned before, we are updating it and it will have all the info that you will ever need on the 4BT.
