I noticed some leaking going on and when I looked underneath I noticed this hole which I am assuming has a plug in it at some point. What is the plug if that is the case?
Am I missing something here?

A new oil pan is cheap insurance. If you're gonna drop it to replace the gasket then you might as well just replace the pan while you're there.
New pan is about $200 last I got one, not bad for what it is. New ones do need slight modifications for certain Cruisers though - mine had oil pump clearance issues but 10 minutes with a grinder and a file took care of it.
