My alternator crapped out recently and I need to get a new one. I was wondering if anyone had a suggetion on which kind I should go with. I have a 1972 FJ55 but am running a swapped '82 2f engine. I believe the stock alternator for '72 was 45amp but the stock alternator for a '82 is 55amp. Another issue is I don't have the bracket to for the newer engine the PO just bolted on the old bracket and alternator from the original F engine. So if I do go with a newer alternator type I'll need to find a bracket.

Autozone has a replacement for $35.99 (p/n 14540), but is a 50amp. Does it really make any difference what amp the alternator is that I chose? Oh another thing to mention is my pig is pretty much bone stock, no accessories (i.e. off road lights, radio, cb, ...).

I have almost the same setup. I have a 72 FJ55 and an 83 2F. I retained the earlier alternator model (replacement 45 amp Bosch)because the wiring harness is set up for an external voltage regulator. The newer alternator would have an internal regulator-not sure how that would affect the system.

I would try cruiserparts.net for a used bracket.

I don't know if a few extra amps makes a difference, but I think it could be a fire hazzard if you stick somemething in there that cranks out more power than what the factory ammeter was rated for...

Stick a GM 110 amp alternator in it. That is what I run in my 40. My pig runs a TBI 350 with a 110 amp alternator. Why would that be a fire hazard?

Because you cannot run a 110 amp alt through a stock amp meter that is limited to around 50 amps and expect it to hold in the smoke.

After reading the original post I'd say you would be safe with a 50 amp alt especially if you don't have a lot of assessories. I suppose the guage could handle it.

Now that I think about it does a 72 even have a gauge or just a light? If so I'd stick with what the system was designed to handle. 45amps. Have your old one rebuilt and be done with it.
