last chance. Barry and I will be linking up in Brooklyn, south of hattiesburg off 49 tomorrow at 1300 if anybody wants to go...going to recon some trails he knows of.

local 2 lanes frame an area with some good camping spots on the south side of Black Creek.

ill have a camera on board for anybody wanting to do the overnighter down the road.

first photo from our successful run today. I didn't get too many photos, but John did. Both trucks did fine in a few tight spots. A pleasure to wheel my little pickup for the first time. Takes trails like a champ..

Beautiful day and trails. Enjoyed it Barry. Ill post my pics tomorrow when I get home

Brooklyn MS run

Saturday afternoon Barry and I went and took a look at some trails that he has been on. We were hoping for a good camp site and an excuse to get off the hard ball.

Brooklyn is just off of 49 below Camp Shelby. Old highway 49 runs right through this one horse town that is only kept alive by outdoor seekers. From what I have read of it's history it is like every other town in the southern part of our state. it was along a rail line and amonst our beautiful pine forrest and boasted a few saw mills etc.......long ago that is.

So fast forward to modern day......Brooklyn is known for the Black Creek and thus canoeing. I investigated the trading post/gas station/town hall/outpost and then linked up with Barry. spotted a nice Lc as well.

working our way down old 49 south of town we took a left onto New york road and began exploring dirt roads and all the feeder trails, most of which quickly turned to forrest or were blocked. We found a few mud holes and did a few 50 point turns to get out of some trails that died out quickly but I definitely think there is alot of exploring to be done.

beautiful pine trees......the Desoto park is really beautiful in some areas (read we saw alot of back woods dumps and trailors)

We were looking for a particular trail which ended up being the last one we explored. it's only a few miles from Brooklyn but has a few fun turns and drops before reaching the sand bar we were hunting.

Just above the sand bar (pic of Barry's truck) would be a good camp site.

We could hear EOD teams at Camp Shelby blowing demo but were probably 10 miles south of them. A family had left a trailer and Silverado and were on the sand bar on a 4 wheeler.

you can tell where the Creek got it's name...

Lastly a cool pic utilizing the tint on my rear window and afternoon light to capture some pines.

obligatory playing in the mud photos...

Not sure if anyone is interested in another day trip or possible over nighter. If so we could work in some hattiesburg area eateries on the way down, fishing, gun shooting, beer drinking, and a few hours of wheeling......the camp shelby museum is also pretty cool as well. I can also give yall some WWII German POW info. and show you a swastika that is still visible where they "thought" their air crews could see them during a raid.

I really want to go to the Camp Shelby museum. Wheeling is optional. Baker's Burger in Hub City is the s***....would easily be swayed into a day trip down there. Once this spring weather goes, so does my thoughts of camping without a/c......

Thanks for the writup and pics

I would definitely be down with that.....I spent a few years at FT Polk and I have filled my mosquito quota for this lifetime (I was reminded of this while hiking along the river Saturday!) I think camping would be fun but with the super mild winter we had it could get ugly right along the river....unless we drank enough and had a GINORMOUS bonfire that smoked alot:D

x2 on all of that!

Been to Shelby museum a long time ago with my father (he trained there in 1944 with the 609th tank destoyer batallion), and it's definitely worth seeing......in some respects, it's as good as the WWII museum in New Orleans!

theres good fishing on the Black Creek. I plan to camp on that sandbar soon. Hopefully before it gets too hot. I want to bring my canoe down there. Would definately be open to burgers and the war museum. The trails pictured are only a fraction of the many side roads we saw. There are definatley some challenges left down there. Sadly, several of the trails I know have been closed by the FS. bad trend IMO.

I would be very much interested in future expedition trips; including an overnighter'.
