I want to give a big shout out/ two thumbs up to Cruiser Outfitters, mainly Bryce and Olly. If you have been following on here you will remember that this spring I bought a H55/split case from them. After installing this I noticed almost right away that there was a slow leak coming from the right side of the transfer case. A phone call later Bryce sent me a new gasket set and asked me to install this, hoping that will stop the leak. What a pain to open the back half of the transfer case due to the center cross member being so close to the rear of the transfer case. Fumbled around and got the rear cover off and replaced the gasket. Refilled and not too long after I still had a small leak. Fortunately the leak was small enough that we were still able to take trips with the Ute. Another call to Bryce and he talked with Olly. Olly then called me. He is the one who opens up new transfer cases when customers want custom gear sets. I had narrowed down the leak coming from one bolt area. Olly suggested I pull that bolt and fill the hole with sealer and install the bolt, thinking that the leak was coming from inside the bolt hole. Did that and it still was leaking. So getting frustrated about this I decided to use some of that leak test fluid in the transfer case oil. Then using the special flashlight I found the source of the leak.

Looks like there was a pin hole or small crack in the weld. Cruiser Outfitters send these case halves out to a machine shop to add weld in these areas on the right side to strengthen the case. Olly agreed that that was where the leak was coming from. He called around to different machine shops here in Anchorage and found one he felt comfortable with to have fix the hole. So I took it to the machine shop and they fixed it. Now no more leaks.

I had ordered the 4:1 low range kit for the transfer case but didn’t like the higher highway rpm’s so I bought a 3:1 low range set that I installed the second time I opened up the case. Still wasn’t happy with the highway rpm’s, and after I found the source of the leak, I asked for a better highway rpm gear set, so Bryce offered to send me these for free if I paid for the machine shop cost. Rpm’s dropped about 250 rpm’s at 65mph now rpm’s are 2200rpms at 65mph. Tonight going camping for the last time this year so will see how this gearing works on the highway especially climbing some fairly steep hills.
Again two thumbs up to Cruiser Outfitters for standing up to what they sell.
Thanks for the great help/service.

Super good insight finding that leak with the light !!!! I wish I had been able to come down to see you this summer! Maybe next western adventure!

Was wondering how these Falken Wildpeak MT would do in the cold. Pleasantly surprised. At 5-15F on bare roads and hard packed snow covered roads they do pretty good. It’s on ice or polished snow pack not so good, which isn’t surprising. Might keep them on for year round use.
