Transfer lever has been hard to shift out of 4wd for a long time. Now refuses to shift back into 2wd no matter how hard I push or what position the truck is in. For some time there has been metallic 'clank' from the transfer area (I think) when the clutch is released. With careful and gentle shifting this is not noticeable so that's how I've been driving it!

I have a spare W56 and a spare R150F sitting around, but if there is a fix for this that does not involve a rebuild/swap, I would appreciate hearing as I already have a long enough 'to-to' list! LOL and TIA!

Is this in a Previa?
Get under the vehicle and have someone else move the shifter so you can see what is or is not happening. Or pull the shifter boots and see what you can see.
Sounds to me like the transfer case is coming out for a rebuild, but it may just be a shifter problem.
Drain the t-case fluid and let us know what you see...

First, the transmission will have nothing to do with shifting the transfer case into 2WD. Try this. Unlock hubs. Put transmission in reverse and roll back under power about 3 feet while gently pushing forward on the TC shifter. See if the TC will shift back into 2WD. You shouldn't need to push that hard, but they can bind up after use.

I had this issue in my FJ40 (different transfer case, but maybe a similar issue). The clutch gear between the high and low side of the case had sheared, making it virtually impossible to shift out of 4WD.

Destroyed Transfer Gear explained.webp

Dead post. The fella did a drive-by and hasn't been seen since the original post.

Yup and I’m not actually sure how I tripped and fell into the Toyota Truck forum anyway - I’ll go back to the 40-series section where I belong. :hillbilly:

Check post count: 300+ isn't a drive-by.;) It's just someone who doesn't stop by that often! Anyway, thanks (late) to those who replied. Reversing did it, without unlocking the hubs.

:hillbilly: Pulling out the fingers here. July, August, September, October, November, December, January. That's what, 7 months since you made the first post? Dude, that is a drive-by. And if you want to brag about post counts I have 9300, and a 15 year badge. So there. :flipoff2:

Welcome back to our slice of MUD. Kick your shoes off and stick around awhile.
