Why are you not doing rain gutter mounts? Just wondering.

I was thinking you should do the full length rain gutter mount to distribute the load.

Welds on the rack look great.

I like the pressure-vessel bumper design...What is the volume?

I'm going to stir up some heavy disagreement here, but I've seen rain gutter mounts pull out before taking the rain gutter with it.

We looked at lots of different ways to do it. The other main problem with gutter mounts is that anyone can walk-up to the truck and unbolt them. This way, all the fasteners will be inside the truck; the mindset behind all the planning on the rig has been "Theft protection" as thats their second worst problem; the first is traction.

The bumper holds 3.2 gallons.

More to come...

I'd be worried about water intrusion and rust-generation with that AL against the steel roof.

maybe a gasket? some sort of sealant?

also, be sure to leave the fasteners rounded/protected inside so that you don't end up with bleeding heads in the event of a large bump (or rollover).

the build looks good so far. overkill. borderline extreme overkill. just like any good project should have.

you need to check the diaphragm and it's gasket on this 2H, it seems to be leaking a lot. and it is hell to change with the engine back in.

Yep, were putting a gasket in between with RTV. Cathodic oxidation is a real problem when you put Al on Fe that we are aware of.

We've got a solution to that problem (pending testing)

Thanks for the kind words!

Did it on Sat. Thanks for the heads-up on that!

Weekend update - Like the one on SNL, but not near as funny.

We are very nearly ready to start her up. If all goes correctly (It never does), were hoping to go to the off-road park on black Friday for a shake down run. A lot of challenging problems cropped up this weekend, but we got the majority of the solved. Bumpers and roof rack are at powder coating and should be done early this week. The truck is sanded and ready for paint. If you'll remember, were painting the truck white as ALL NGO vehicles are white which help them "not get messed with"

We finished rhino lining the bed-area. The tail gate and back of the back seat had yet to get done.

This is the 48" Hi-lift that was donated. One of the guys in our club is friends with the owner back in Indiana (goes to his church) so he donated a Hi-lift with ALL the cool accessories. We welded the mounts directly to the inside of the roof rack.

Both tool boxes totally done with seat cushions complete; we used marine grade "pleather" which is spossed to be pretty resilient

Doesn't look like it from this picture, but the twin sticks are almost done. (Simple sticks - H-L & 2-4)

"Joelson" Installing Power steering hoses (this was kind of a trick - I'll explain more)
DSCN1988.JPG

So the 2F power steering pump is on the top-drivers side of the engine; the 2H pump is on the bottom-pass side. The HJ60 Power steering lines literally crumbled in my hands (not real sure how they were holding ANY pressure at all. My buddies over at the VW shop Keep EVERY fitting EVER made in stock and we were able to put together a teflon-stainless braided high-pressure line.

Oh yeah, by the way, the drive-train is completely installed! Motor mounts are welded - If I hadn't assumed I would have been able to find a 2H oil filter in town somewhere, she'd probably already be running.
DSCN1990.JPG

This is the super duty assume fuel/water separator we installed as were never sure of the quality of fuel he will be able to get in Liberia; were sending several replacement filters too.

The sand ladders were sending with the truck - Hopefully they never get stuck, if they do, this is one more tool to help get them unstuck

How'd she get in the pictures again!

Glad the motor is installed. Once again I'm jealous that you bought that old HJ instead of me.

you got the rear bumper mounted yet? or is that out getting sprayed/powder coated?

Its currently getting powder coated

The wal-mart here in Waco had 2H and 3B oil filters, its fram but its a filter.

Thats AMAZING actually! I called every single place (including Walmart) and cross referenced every number and no one had it in stock. I ordered a WIX. It will be in today.

This is the solid works model of the front bumper (without plating) that was turned in for the grade (I think they got an "A")

Could you let me know where you got the new 12V alt from in australia, and whether it came with the vac pump?
thanks
Jan

Good to hear the build is going well. That is a nice design on the bumper. :)

David Ayers volunteered his time to go the powder coat place and do all the sand blasting as they are donating everything.

Powder coating will be done today.

Currently trying to figure out if we want to switch the EDIC motor to 12V or just put a mechanical linkage...

You now have a 12V alt, correct?
Did you switch all the other relays to 12V, like starter relay, glow plug relay, the headlights...?
The edic relay (fuel control relay) is a very expensive part (~600$), but it interlinks oil pressure, starting system and the edic.
Roodogs in australia is likely able to get used 12V relays for a good price.

Looks good man, been following this for a while.

One question though, with that beastly train bumper you riding on the front....what if something goes wrong on the winch? How is there access to that without having to take off the entire bumper?

don't know of course, but it looks like the winch would be pretty freely accessible, if you look at the mounting holes...
