How big a tire are you hanging there? I would worry that my 35s would be too heavy for the door?
We rode back from ATL with the factory spare on it. But I had a 33 on a steel wheel that I bolted up when we got home.
It's solid. Watched it all the way home and the tire never jiggled at all.
Factory spare plus driver, no issues
There are a number of steel spacers which are used to tie the inner and outer skin's together. 4 large bolts thru hold the main body on, 2 smaller bolts at the bottom thru the seam stiffen the base. A small strip of something wraps the body and the Becky tail and sits on the pad installed at the rear.
The "pad" is the key. It transfers all load from the hinges when closed. It is shimmed to get the proper "lift". This means the only time the hinges are under load is when the door is opened.
(Edit: I cannot stress that this is, in my opinion, one of the most important aspects of this design. If you think thru the loading on the door, in a Prado the entire weight of the tire is carried by the hinges. Every bump jolt, etc. is all carried by the hinges and the latch. This design eliminates that in it's entirety. The weight of the door and tire are carried by the small pad located below the door, so the latch is never under any load and the hinges only see load when the door is open. I know time will ultimately tell on things, but I think long term it will prove itself out.)
Some of the spacers are fiddly, and a pair of small hands is helpful but not necessary.
End of the day, it is an excellent solution if you don't want a full bumper and actually use your hitch for towing. Price, well that's for each individual to decide. If any of you will be near East TN for GSMTR in a couple weeks, there will be 2 trucks there you can inspect, Ours and the ACC rig so please stop by and say hi.
