Yes, it isn’t cheap. But most of the rear bumpers that have swing outs are over $2k so this isn’t half the cost, it is less than half. Plus it is about on par with a Wilco Hitchgate Solo, but more elegant and rear camera friendly. The difference between this and a full bumper buys a lot of gas, firewood and food for trips. I think I would only cross this off the list in favor of a full bumper if I really want the extra departure angle.

I'm the lucky human that got the same guy that built Becky to build my rear bumper way back in 2010 :p

If it is too expensive for you, don't buy it. Post up your affordable alternative. Wilcos are... $800? Enjoy.

for all the engineers ;) here's some install pics (I just grabbed a few, all of them are on FB Page @ACCToyota)

That drilling through the door ... so scary! Talk about measure twice and cut once; I would hate to screw that up.

I think it looks like a great solution.

This is why Mud is better than FB. So much clearer to see all the photos in one thread. Thanks! 👍

How big a tire are you hanging there? I would worry that my 35s would be too heavy for the door?

We rode back from ATL with the factory spare on it. But I had a 33 on a steel wheel that I bolted up when we got home.

It's solid. Watched it all the way home and the tire never jiggled at all.

Factory spare plus driver, no issues

There are a number of steel spacers which are used to tie the inner and outer skin's together. 4 large bolts thru hold the main body on, 2 smaller bolts at the bottom thru the seam stiffen the base. A small strip of something wraps the body and the Becky tail and sits on the pad installed at the rear.

The "pad" is the key. It transfers all load from the hinges when closed. It is shimmed to get the proper "lift". This means the only time the hinges are under load is when the door is opened. (Edit: I cannot stress that this is, in my opinion, one of the most important aspects of this design. If you think thru the loading on the door, in a Prado the entire weight of the tire is carried by the hinges. Every bump jolt, etc. is all carried by the hinges and the latch. This design eliminates that in it's entirety. The weight of the door and tire are carried by the small pad located below the door, so the latch is never under any load and the hinges only see load when the door is open. I know time will ultimately tell on things, but I think long term it will prove itself out.)

Some of the spacers are fiddly, and a pair of small hands is helpful but not necessary.

End of the day, it is an excellent solution if you don't want a full bumper and actually use your hitch for towing. Price, well that's for each individual to decide. If any of you will be near East TN for GSMTR in a couple weeks, there will be 2 trucks there you can inspect, Ours and the ACC rig so please stop by and say hi.

How complete is the kit? Does it include everything for the camera extension, license plate relocation and plate lights?

@Cooperd0g oddly, I didn't think twice, and after the first hole you just kinda are numb to it and the rest just kinda go. Threw caution to the wind and didn't even put down any tape before the bit hit the paint. Sharpie -> punch -> drill

Also, it's pretty intuitive. Centering left to right is about it. It indexes off the lip for up and down. And the template for the inside holes is used to locate things.

I'm with you on all the cutting, too much to screw up for me! I went the easy route and bought the Wilco....love it!
I stalled in less then 30 min and I can remove anytime for any reason.

Took the GX out to GSMTR last weekend. We joined Brian from ACC for some riding. The GX took several good bumps and ran trails for 2 good days, the tire carrier was rock solid. No movement at all and everything still opens and closes as normal. The orangeboxx fold down made more noise by far and needs adjusting (and a little tweaking for a more solid install, stay tuned for more on that later)

There is a good video on my wife's FB that I will try to link, and while I know 1 trip is just 1 trip, but it's a dang good start.

EDIT:

Pictures just because everybody likes pictures...

Any new news on this? Anyone else bought/installed or are they even available yet? Agree with the vast majority of the previous posts that there's just not $1,000 worth of value to these, but it's a really nice piece and attractive at a more reasonable price point.

Lots installed in gxor. All happy.

I think if they had a 50% off sale I would pull the trigger. :)
