Well, it turns out I found the culprit of my unusually elevated temps (been hitting 180 the past few days as well). It is in the shop for a transmission service (35k of hard miles over the past 16 months) and they told me there was a blockage in one of the lines which was severely limiting the flow of the fluid. They said the transmission was basically using the same fluid without effectively cycling it which explains the elevated temps. I'm having the 21 year old lines replaced to be safe going forward. I figure the blockage must have happened recently as my temps have historically never exceeded 170 even in harsh driving conditions.

Hope they don't find one of these:

Glad you got it figured out

See if they can provide you with the offending blockage- strange that suddenly happens in what was a normally function system.

Did you confirm your electric fan was cycling on & off at the right temps, and fan clutch was good?

Aux fan was working. I tested it last night and it was definitely kicking on. I replaced the fan clutch last month. I had replaced the fan bracket assembly when I did the TB/WP job earlier this year. A few weeks later the fun clutch seized in the "on" position so it never shut off when the engine was running. I lost horsepower and had a "whoosh" sound in the cabin at all times, but the engine never ran cooler before :) I replaced the clutch at that time and now that system runs normally and engine temps usually stay right between 180-188. Anyway, I've asked them to confirm what the blockage was and what possibly caused it.

Had what appeared to be a shipping plug of some type manage get into the rubber line from my transmission to the oil cooler. Couldn't tell you how it got there...but it did. I suppose a hose could break down internally also...creating a full or partial obstruction.

Now...I go around with my IR temp gun from time to time and shoot my hoses, radiator, trans pan, A/C lines (inlets and outlets), oil cooler, etc...

I just got one of those IR temp guns for my trailer hubs. Looks like I can multi-purpose it now :)

Just curious what everyone thinks of my readings. This was after 1hr of forest service roads at 30mph and then 45min of asphalt highway at 55mph. Are my coolant temps a little high?

That is about exactly where I would be too. About 140 and 190. At faster speeds, the coolant temp will drop to about 178. On sustained hill climbs the trans temps can climb as high as about 200 for me.

i am noticing there are 2 temps for a/t oil. is one the fluid temp going into the trans and the other reading the fluid temp on the way out?

I see you have a 2006, this thread would be more helpful for you:

With summer ambient temps of low 90s, I am usually running 145-150 deg on the highway at 70 to 75 mph. In city stop-and-go, it will climb to 160-170 deg, sometimes as high as 180 if it is really hot.

Water temps will usually hang around 197-198 on the highway at 70 to 75 mph, sometimes getting as high as 209-211 if accelerating up a long incline. If I run only 60 mph on the highway, water temps will drop to 191-195. Usually in city stop and go or at idle, and I steady at about 193.

In the winter, everything seems to run about 5-8 deg cooler.

I think I am probably due for a new thermostat, based on my water temps.

My Land Cruiser has a digital Auber Gauge and a temperature sender/probe

Would you mind post a picture where you mount your Auber gauge please ?

Pulled an 18' foot trailer, with 3700 lbs of payload (tractor, front loader and rotary cutter) for 2 hrs....up and down hills today and never got over 146°F. In my 80 series.

You can mount an auber gauge just about anywhere, but I put two of them (one for trans temp....the other an aux oil pressure gauge) in the space where the cup holder used to be (removed).

This makes a clean install:

Okay, seeing some interesting variation in this thread. The FSM repeatedly says the normal operating range for the A343F is 158f-176f. But some seem to never get into this range, with typical readings between 120f-140f. I am seeing values in the FSM range during typical driving.
