Another thank you to Alia176 for this write up.

I did some AC work this spring and your pics and write up were very helpful.

I ended up having to take the evaporator out twice when the new Denso expansion block failed. I can RR it in about 30 minutes now. :D

30 min, wow!!

Glad to be of help.

Well that was with the glove box and cross piece already out. I hadn't put them back on yet.

Still, it is pretty easy to get out once you've done it once and know where all the fasteners are.

What are the symptoms of a bad expansion valve?

My A/C is nice and frosty for say 45 min, but after that it begins getting warmer (seems worse when on the interstate with the rpm near 3k).

After letting it sit for a while it goes back to being cold again. I've never touched the a/c system on it and it has worked great up until this summer.

It also has a pusher fan in the front that engages with the compressor and it's not overheating.

1992 - Cooler Expansion Valve - DENSO 88515-33010-83 - I was passing by the dealership and stopped in and asked to look up the number.

What is the part number for the expansion valve and is it same across the board 1991-1997 or is it different for 1991-92 / '93-97?

And there is the expansion valve! It's held on with two allen bolts.

Two pics showing a new valve next to the old valve. I sure hope replacing this valve will make my vent temps stay cold!

What is the chances of you having a list of Part Numbers and Qty's on :
all o-rings
schrader valves
condensor
expansion valve

And are these universal for the years:
1991-1992
1993-etc?

Yes, sorry - at work and just asking, as I know I have to go visit the dealer and then make my CDDan order...

My approach was this: Follow Alia176's write up on servicing an 80 series AC system, my personal choice was to replace all o-rings, schrader valves, condensor, expansion valve, and then pressure check the complete system once it was re-assembled @ 50psi, once I could confirm that there were no leaks, I released the air pressure and scheduled a shop visit for vac and re-charge. That was 2 mos ago and I still have 40* at the vents. Good luck.

I don't want to rain on anyone's parade, but after I did this to my truck, it improved greatly, but didn't yield the results as others. My vent temps went from 80 to 58. It's a nice improvement, but it's certainly not in the 40's as I had hoped. If I leave my windows up and the the interior temp gets up around 170, it cannot recover until the sun goes down. When money allows, I will replace all parts of the AC. My next step is to change the color of the truck, I think going from black to desert tan should help.

At least paint the roof, that should help quite a bit. A local 80 painted his roof off white and the rest of the vehicle is still 6M1 green. On a hot day, the roof is touchable while the side of the 80 is smoking hot

sorry to highjack this thread, but I currently have the carpet out of my truck and the heat that comes off the tranny tunnel is super-hot compared to what is coming off the roof and or even the windows!!!

I have some "sauce" that I will be applying to my tunnel to reduce this heat at some point in my thread. I wish I had a heat gun just to show you the temps just in 30mins of driving.

sounds like the cat converter is doing a good job of catalyzing the unburned fuel. By any chance, are you running too rich? I hate to hijack my own thread, LOL!!

Did you refill the system yourself or have it professionally done?

I had a member here who's in the a/c business do the system fill. It took a couple days of cycling the system and resetting the pressures to get it perfect.

Initially I wasn't that impressed with the a/c performance, after getting the pressures set just right it works very well.

All that was done when I was in Austin, so it was real heat, not Montana heat. :p

Just came in from doing the expansion valve change over. Not sure if that is my problem but previous owner said it was bad.

Followed this DIY and it was perfect. My 80 is a 1994 so there were some simple differences. I had to drop my ECU (three bolts) to get at the plugs for the unit. Let it hang down but it was still in the way so I unplugged the 4 plugs and set it aside. Only other difference was my 1994 didn't have the "last" plug that was mentioned after the unit is loose and ready to come out.

I actually felt like I knew what the hell I was doing !!

Thanks very much to Alia176 for this. Now to get the thing charged up and cooling down.

This is one of the many reasons I did my 1" body lift...

You're welcome fellas, glad to be of service.

I'm now doing the same work on the old Benz using R12, been an interesting journey so far. I got to rebuild my very first Denso a/c compressor. That was uber cool.

Part numbers for a '96 are:

88515-22240 Expansion Valve
88471-50020 Receiver & Dryer Assembly
88501-60101 Evaporator

Does anyone have the part number for the o-rings needed to replace the expansion valve and receiver/dryer. I did not get all the correct ones and I had to reuse a old one or two and now I may have a leak. Damnit. ;(
