I need some advice:
I am planning to attend with 3 kids under 10yers old. And we have zero camping experience and zero camping paraphernalia.

Are there any reasonable lodging options at Silverton or nearby areas? Are Durango or Ouray too far to stay?

Durango and Ouray are too far away IMO for participating in HIH daily. However, there is the Purgatory resort which is roughly midway between Silverton and Durango. Stayed there 2 summers ago with my dad and were very pleased with our stay there. Silverton is a TINY town and all the lodging for the week of HIH is likely already all taken.

Agree with @geanes , Call Shane or Hayley at the Wyman hotel, they are the owners and are great supporters of this event. They may have a room.

Sorry to be missing this event again. But, it always coincides with an annual fly fishing trip I do with my best mate. It's a can't miss kind of deal. But, I just finished up a batch of tailgate covers for you guys today. Have a great time!

Thanks for the awesome product and the support for the community! After I saw them at HIH8 I just had to have one before HIH9. I just installed mine last week. Can’t wait to break it in at HIH!!!

You’ll want to stay as close to a Silverton as possible. Ouray is around 45 minutes away and Durango about an hour - those 8 am trail departures mean you’ll be up early to roll into Silverton on time. Might check Airbnb and VRBO for properties in/near Silverton if none of the hotels work.

This guy has cabin options. I believe a couple HIH folks usually stay here. Maybe look at renting camping gear? Some outfitter type places will have that option. Or we have some folks rent small camping trailers in Durango and use those. I’m always jealous of those folks. Looks warm and dry!

I love camping but am kind of iffy about it here. Loading the cruiser with 4 people and a dog and camping gear and cooking gear and food and chairs and no fire pits.... looking at some Airbnb and VRBO options myself.

Returners who’ve done both, what are your thoughts? Missing much of the experience by not camping?

I’m thinking a condo in Purgatory may be the way to go. Thoughts?

Camping is way more fun as long as that is your thing. We rented a hotel room in Silverton two years ago and flew out and shipped the truck. My son was very young at the time and we weren't ready for the entire road trip back and forth from PA. Awesome to still be out there, but way more fun to hang around camp and get the "full experience."

Get a big Thule box to put on top of the truck and you can easily fit all your gear needed. We had a ground tent and 4 plus a dog when we first came out a few years ago. We had a lot of fun, even with all the rain that year!

From my experience in other events the camping with everyone else is half the fun. I have a extra tent and queen size air mattress I could probably squeeze in if someone needed just the basics.

I want to personally thank you for donating these tailgate covers (and other items). After attending HIH for 4 years, I finally won something in the raffle last year and it was one of the tailgate covers. I've had it installed for a year now and it is a fantastic product that is easy to install, easy to keep clean and very durable. I even put a TrekBoxx sticker on my cruiser, which I normally only put destination and event stickers on. Thanks for your support of our little event.

My wife wanted me to relay that you need to think about how much time it takes getting the kids going in the morning. Some of the trail runs start as early as 7 am so the farther you are away, that's just that much earlier you have to wake up and get the family roused and going. My kids are teenagers now so it's easier than it was when they were little but I remember how challenging it can be getting them up, clothed, fed and making sure all their required 'precious' items are in the vehicle. If you think getting going and getting to the meeting point somewhere in Silverton by 7 is not possible, sign up for trail runs that start later. Also consider shorter trail runs if your kids can't handle being in the car too long. Plus, there are often not any toilet facilities available for a few hours and some runs can be harder to stop for regular bio-breaks.

My wife is suggesting runs such as Clear Lake, Ophir to Telluride or any runs I'm leading (Marc Ahlen). We bring a portable toilet and privacy shelter with us for helping with the bio-break complication. I'd also recommend California to Corkscrew and The Gulches, for easier, shorter runs with little kids.

Folks have already given some great advice. Give Shane at the Wyman Hotel a call. The Wyman is where the opening night party will be held as well. Silverton does not have a ton of lodging, but there are enough. It's a very small town so there are no major brand hotels. AirBnB and VRBO is always an option and pretty affordable.

If you're up for the camping experience, that's fun too.... unless it's raining, which its been known to do from time to time at HIH. I have a 12-year-old and twins that are 10. I've camped with them when they were younger, but when they were 5 and 3, that would have been tough in the rain, in a tent, for their first camping experience.

Lodging in Ouray would be the next closest, but it's only slightly bigger than Silverton.

This is the only "drawback" of HIH for families that have never camped before. It can be overwhelming to drive a long distance and setup an unfamiliar tent in unfamiliar surroundings. If you buy a camping outfit prior to the event, do a night or two of backyard camping to see how everyone does. Coming from Wisconsin, the altitude may give you a little bit of trouble on the first night or too.

If Chris and I were in the raffle... this is absolutely where I'd put my ticket. These tailgate covers are awesome. Something I will definitely be adding. Great stuff David and we appreciate your continued support! @TrekboxX

I severely under estimated how much of a pain in the ass AHC removal is. We hacked up lines and everything else and it was still a pain.

Had a couple friends helping today and we got the front diff out of the old and into the new, AHC removed, rock sliders off and only had to torch one bolt. Finished the front suspension and got the rear shocks out of the LX. One of the torsion bars refused to come out of the adjuster even after a large sledge hammer and air hammer. Thankfully Duc had a set on the shelf.

I worked from 9am to about 10:30 yesterday. Hopefully today won’t be as long. Need to get the rear e locker axle installed in the LX today, skids and rock sliders on, and I’d call today successful.
