I have a 97
got the Dial Switch
How do i Check that one.
The Lights are Blinking when turned on.....no locking

front and rear (dial switch) will not lock if you don't have the CDL locked. To lock the CDL on a stock FZJ80, you have to put it into Lo, and drive in a circle or figure eight until the CDL light stays lit and the ABS light turns on.

yes I know! shift to 4 lo and the CDL symobal and ABS should illuminate...then the axles can be sequntially locked. I have had the sensor replaced at the dealer and they said it worked...when i picked up ...nothing. they then said that it may be the motor..UG.....UPDATE!!! I read that becaus ethe previous owner NEVER shifted outa 4hi, they just need some encouragenment and one method is to try it a hundred times....I gott to the point where I would almost try it subconciessly....TODAY HOLY SH** IT WORKED AXLES AND ALL.

Don't have a CDL Light
And no ABS is Light is on either
What next
I read the Above
where is the 4 LO switch./Sensor???

Thanks for the Help

I love you guys! 2.5 years of 4x4 Impotency Fixed!!!

Ok...I purchased my 97 FZJ80 w/factory lockers about 2.5 years ago from another MUDDER.. unfortunately when I bought it the lockers wouldn't engage.. Figured I'd have to tear the lockers apart and clean them up since all I got was the dreaded blinking locker lights.... Anyway, I came across this thread this past week and realized that there is a process to the friggin madness to engaging the lockers!:bang: I've wheeled it, used 4LO and even engaged the CDL button(installed by PO) and could hear the CDL engage and the click in the kick panel... but I never realized there was a CDL light that was suppose to turn on, nor did I know the ABS was suppose to shut off and light up as well. Did some more :bang:

Anyway, I read this and the other posts that the lights have to turn on in order to engage them! I did the figure eight thing I pulled the CDL switch on the dash to check to make sure it was not loose and even climbed under the truck and pulled the connector from the CDL sensor to make sure it wasn't gummed up. Still after trying some wiggling of wires and trying to reach around to short the sensor it still didn't work....Grrrr. Being the type that doesn't give up easily.. I said screw it and went looking for a wrench to pull the sensor.. I figured it it worked for Bearcat80... it might be the ticket.

Didn't have a 27mm wrench, I did however have a 1 1/8 wrench which fit perfectly and it turned right off... The little spring loaded thingy seemed to function fine, looked to be in good shape.. pushed it in and out about 30 or so times, did the paperclip shorting out thing at the same time, reinstalled it and hooked the connector back up. Got in the truck and started the engine....engaged 4LO and wait.....wait for it......wait....f.o.r......it......nothing! Damn. So I figured I'll just move the truck back down the driveway and park it..... as soon as I put it in drive, LO & Behold.... the LIGHTS CAME ON!!!! Both the CDL and the ABS light!!!! Hallelujah! (Bright heavenly light from the clouds open up and shining down on me) I then engaged the lockers... both of them... sure enough the front engaged (NO BLINKING!!!) but the rear wouldn't engage.... so not to be outdone by a stubborn ornery LC... I took it to the street re-engaged the CDL, CDL Light 'check', ABS light 'check', and commenced to engage front and rear lockers, blink.... blink....blink..... PULL BACK AND SET THE HOOK... SOLID FRONT AND REAR LOCKERS!!! Drove it down the block (really slow) turned them off, turned it back on, off, on, off on....!!! HELL YEAH!!! SUCCESS MOFO!!!:beer::beer::beer:

Oh man... I was so happy!! my neighbors probably thought I was some crazy guy! Thinking I'm just learning to drive or something... cuz it was slow and the tires chirping and truck heaving like a kid on his first day trying to drive a stick shift!! Anyway sorry for the long winded post.. but I just want to thank all of you mudders before me that figured this out and kicked down the knowledge!!

Thanks again! If your ever in LA.. I'll buy you guys a beer!!

ScottyDog 'officially 3x locked!! WOO-HOO!!

I have to do all test above. I just got 1995 FZJ 80 yesterday, and my CDl seems not engaged while it's in 4Lo, probably sensor problem dirty/got dust something.
Mine don't have optional CDL switch so it must engage CDL when I put to 4Lo right?!

From what I understand you are correct.

Put it Neutral, apply brake, move the shifter into low gear, put it in drive or reverse/move the knob clockwise to select FR/RR lock/on stock 80 locker set up it needs to be under load (pull against a curb and than try it) and that should do it. Good luck.

UPDATE! OH MY GOD THEY WORK. Aftre replacing the sensor, they still didnt work, but I was convinced they were just sticky from lack of use! I just kept trying ..and trying...and trying you gete the idea.....Out of the blue one day ....weeks after I bought it, I tried 4lo almost subconciensoulsy..IT freakin worked!!...more I try it, the more it works! axle lockers and all! ....Now question....I do not need full blown 6inches of lift monster tires etc. I am a true weekend warrior and have seen all kinds of 4wd (rovers, jeeps and yotas) perform incredibley well off road -BONE STOCK. However, Im looking for a decet lift and atller tires to start, may get ARB and lighst later....If I go 2.5" lift OME medium duty...what size tire?

Same here: I've bought two 80s, and both of them took a lot! of tries before the CDL worked. They just get sticky from never being used...

So, after all of this, I guess the question is how often do we need to actuate our lockers to make sure that are available when we really need them? Once a year? Biannually? Quarterly? Monthly? Daily? (I know that is a bit ridiculous!)

Thanks.

Idk I cycle mine once a weak or so in the field by my house and after each fluid change.

With 2.5 you could fit 33s maybe even 35s. I run 33s since I don't have gears and don't want to put too much strain on the trans.

To Scotty Dog

You Lucky Man
Mine are still waiting for me To do something.................
Who Knows
I will keep trying...............Let you all Know
when Christmas arrive for me

Take a look at 285/75 R 16 tire. That size is in most cases 33" tall. Or check 255/85 R 16 this tires are about 34" tall, they are bit skinny but work great off and on road and great mpg's.

I run 255 85 16s (33.5" x 10.5") And have 3" OME J springs... When I bought it the PO had brand new 315's, but it struggled up any type of an incline... I like the skinnies.. and seems to be less stress on the steering as well.. But that's just my opinion!

I may look at the 255 85 16s when we replace all five 285 75 16s (well, except the spare, which is a 275 70r16 ). I am torn between having the rubber on the road (285s) versus the narrower track on the 255s. Snow is my biggest problem here... oh, an mud... IH8MUD!

front locker issue

Since everyone is digging into their lockers, can anyone help me with the wiring to the actual motor? I am trying to determine if I have the right wires coming from the harness to the motor. Here is what I have on my 97 lx450...

FROM harness--------------------------- TO on motor
position 1: Dark Blue/black -------------Yellow
position 2: Green/red --------------------- to sensor (looks like green/black)
position 3: White/black --------- (splits) to sensor and to Black wire at motor
position 4: Dark Blue (heavy gauge) -----Dark Green (heavy gauge)
position 5: Dark Blue/Green -------------- Green/red
position 6: Dark Blue/Yellow -------------- Lt. Green

So, every manual that I go do does not show these colors on the motor: lt. green, and yellow solid wires. Can anyone confirm or deny these combinations?

Here is my thread with more information if needed...
