It's been a few years, but my recollection is it wasn't necessary to remove the studs - you use them to mount the plate. If your blank has two mounting holes, one will go over the stud and receive a nut and the other hole gets a bolt. In fact it's probably easier to mount the blank as it can hang from the stud while you get the bolt started - way less likelihood of dropping it multiple times while trying to maneuver in that very tight area back there.

Yes for the exhaust side it was ok, was able to put the blanking plates on. For the inlet side, I think the studs need to be removed as the threads are not long enough for a nut to tighten on the blanking plates. I will try the heat method as described above.
