hey all, I just recently picked up a very clean fzj80 with a bad headgasket for 300 bucks. I had the head done, and got a new headgasket in. she's running great but I'm getting code 26, and if I remember right it's an 02 sensor code. I have done some searching, and people seem to have running problems with this code. Is it worth replacing the 02 sensors? they are pricy and I don't really have the cash to spend on them right now. I am just looking for advice on other problem areas I could look for before I pull the trigger on new 02 sensors.

Appears to be code 26 Air-Fuel Ratio Rich

Here are the rest of the codes to help out with any others you may get... :)

I've had problems with code 26 in my truck. Below are 2 links that may be helpful. Make sure to read post 13 in the second link,, it could be the source of your problem.

its now intermittent as I've been driving it more and more. I have no idea how long it's been sitting, but it seems to be running better and better as I put miles on it. the light comes and goes and on startup it seems to idle low. but when I rev it up a bit it holds the idle where it should be. I'm thinking maybe a sticky throttle cable and I have the adjustment a little loose. thank you for the help! I will definitely blow the o2 sensor plugs and turn them so I don't have that particular issue in the future

So Code 26 has gone away, And it is now throwing code 28. I will get new 02 sensors on order.
I figure I ought to post some pics of my new cruiser. For the $1500 I have into it, I couldn't be happier!

This is it The way I got it. I did remove the flares. Dont have any pictures of it prior to today. It had one very bad headgasket. I got it done in a weekend and its running great!

I swapped the tires and wheels off of my FJ75 That is down for the winter for rust repair.

Thanks for The help, I look forward to asking more dumb questions in the future

I thought: Wow! That's impressive that a new member got through a head gasket in a weekend!

Then I saw the pics.........

Ya frickin' HOARDER!

Hoarder? me? never!
you can't even see them all!
don't tell anyone about the land rover or the jeep 🤫
My uncle is somewhat of an fzj80 expert he has done probably 25 of them so I did this head at his place. knowing all of the tricky stuff is a life saver on these engines!

You own a land drover plus a heep, you're a glutton for punishment.
To be fair They're real old, The heep is a 59 and the rover is a 75. And The rover has only tried to kill me once! that ain't bad for British engineering.

I did all the gear oil throughout the 80 with my trusty 5 gallon bucket of gear oil and the handy pump that sits on the bucket.
Its crazy how people overlook the gear oil. The front was about empty and the rear seems to have had motor oil put in it judging by how foamy it was. Transfercase was full and clean so I didn't bother messing with that.
Going on a trip to Colorado tomorrow, So lets hope it doesn't break down on me!
sometimes it lopes and idles low. But if I manually adjust the idle with my foot it smooths out. I lubed the throttle cable so I bet I'm going to have to adjust the idle when the oil soaks all the way down the cable and loosens up a bit.

My first and only go around with a British car was when i bought a brand new 1975 Triumph TR7 sports car. It didn't take very long for the newness to wear off before it became a big pain in my ass maintenance wise. I kept it for about a year before i traded it in for a 1973 4X4 bronco.

the rover has been surprisingly reliable! it's got the original little 2.25 liter 4 banger, so whats does go wrong is easy to fix. but I had a break line explode on me so it's parked until I fix the rust and the brakes. my mom has a 70 something triumph stag that is a nightmare as far as repair work goes, but I'm not a fan of little cars in general for that reason!

I don't like small cars or real big women, but somehow, I just seem to find myself in 'em!

So I’m currently chasing down code 26 and looking into the O2 sensors. I looked on partsouq and eBay and no luck a replacement part anyone know of something comparable?

Which year/engine?

I used the Denso specced for the '95-97 on my '94 since the '94 O2 sensors are rarer than hens teeth.

You can also test them prior to just replacing them.... FSM has the procedures.

I have 94 1fz as well. I’ll have to look into the FSMs sets do you remember the Denso part number?
