Dude, I love that bumper. I have the receiver on mine and everyday it just calls to me to do the same! Looks great.

nice build D, thanks for posting all the in process stuff. i have to say i'd never considered recycling the hitch receiver AS the bumper, it IS one stout hunk a steel! gotta say i love pretty 80's but the modified ones that aren't afraid of some trail rash really turn my crank! you have brought yours a LONG way, the more time i spend with my hands in the guts of mine the less i feel i could ever "upgrade" out of it. keep on rockin!

Ill shoot some vids at the grocery store later for you......

That trail would kick the s*** out of the 80 and I dont want to f it up. That hdj on 35's was pinging off of the rocks pretty good and Im pretty sure his draglink was bent at the end of the day.

D

a huge gouge I put in the stinger the other day

Wheeling those 37's are we :D?

Edit: sounds like you are hitting parking lights at the store :flipoff2:

You can recess it pretty far - really the simplest way to replace the stock cross member/bumper is with a hitch between the frame rails, and then you can add on what you want.

Since Darwink stole from me, I'll post mine :grinpimp: (although I stole his carrier idea :o)

Lol hit the garage door over at my neighbors place....

I do plan to wheel the beater a bit, just not on that trail. I was using the sliders on the 60 frequently and its got a foot and a half more clearance. Also, 37's are great for dding and doing groceries so yeah.

I did steal the bumper idea from Nay but elaborated a little mostly due to using scraps to build it. The rear 1/4 trim thing came from that dude as well but was done mostly to get rid of rust.

Well fug nay, i've seen the tube on yours but never noticed the hitch... Derp. My bad, nice job to both of you then :D

Apparently I should read more mud, HTF is that going to be possible? Lol

My hitch came later so it was just tube for awhile - the tube is welded to the very top of the hitch, which triangulates the bumper. That's how we decided how far to set the hitch back, and I could weld in additional hitch to bumper bracing if desired.

It's a cool way to go, although tube is difficult to brace out on the wings so you don't bend it, and 80's like to hammer those corners.

Of course, that's where hockey puck bumper body mounts come in :D

OK, back to Darwink's grocery trip and his belief that throttling a 60 is better than crawling a properly geared 80 :flipoff2:

tee hee, ya so what good  did the 80 help you bring back D???!!!:flipoff2:

i see tan al's liner all over my poor peeled clearcoat 80 this summer (with the rearbumper solution fermenting in the back of my head)... just gotta decide how to deal with 6m1 "carpet" and the tan al's "drapes". thinking rattle can door jambs/doors, black or a bad tan match? i don't have avocado/guacamole/sour cream options :D i really should start a "function over form" build thread of my own one of these days...

you know D, full body bedliner would be pretty beater beefy skin ;) back to your regularly scheduled program.

hey another q, D, when you had DT's and deflared. did you end up with mud/muck on doors, mirrors, windshield etc? i have 285 Dt'S and still my oem flares. i'd like to deflare, but i'm skairt to make the fams crawl over mud, muck, etc to get in.... yes they win, sigh (if :princess: ain't happy, well the rest of the peasants will suffer, and yeah i know, i put her on that pedestal, she didn't ask for it ;)) .

cheers,
j

Case of mgd today..... A Canadian drinkin yank beer, I know.

My 80 needs frequent body work (every spring) so bed liner would be a waste. I prefer the scuff and spray approach and have a couple cans of body matched paint on standby. The blue slate seems to blend really good.

As for the dt's, I didnt find they threw dirt and mud too bad w/o the flares but then again the po deflared it so I have nothing to compare it to. I pop my tacoma front mud flaps on the front of the 80 for the winter to reduce the slush build up on the doors but thats about it. Didnt bother with rear flaps this past winter and it did roost a bit but the 1/4's are cut so......

There isnt too much mud at the mall so Im not the best one to ask..

And Nay, while I did crawl quite a bit that day, I also had a few retard moments. The only way to get up that loose s*** in the vid is to goose it. The sound that van makes when you give er the throttle is real pretty to boot. Im addicted to the ram jet whistle.

lol, meh, you could certainly pick worse yank beer. i may or may not have drank my share of MGD, but i'm pretty sure i destroyed all recording devices... :hillbilly:

you know in "beater" style you could just mix and roll the panels you have de-cancer-ed so far :hillbilly::flipoff2: eventually you'll get a whole truck! i hear ya on rattle can, my sliders, ARB, rear hitch... are on rustoleum satin black plan. VERY good match for ARB black powdercoat FYI

ok thanks for the info D. we don't get much mud here, but snow, slush etc at 7400' is a real event in the winter. if you didn't have crap on the bottom of your side mirrors, rear doors etc then maybe 285 DT'S don't sling too bad outside the stock fenders. they certainly "look" bigger on your rig than mine for the same tire and lift.

Yeah, the flares do make the 80 look wide. I think my dt's stuck out a half inch at most w/o the flares.

Decided I needed to be more politically correct since I drive a gas guzzling suv to the mall a lot so I did what I could to minimize my carbon footprint. Yep stole this idea too.
