took me 4 days to read through this thread, entertaining. Makes me feel guilty i've had my "van" sitting in the garage for almost 2 months trying to put fresh paint on it lol. 2 more weeks and i'll have it done....maybe.
 
Finished up the garage modifications so its back to the same old.

Redid the 80 carrier to fit a 37. Used the base of the old one and then got creative with some tube. There is a receiver up top that accepts the spare mounting device and the whole thing is gusseted like crazy.

Looks great. Why didn't you go with the rear stinger type like the last one? Were the mounting pivots too narrow?

Honestly, the old carrier was made to fit a 285 using scrap tube and random bends a week before a 6000km trip lol. It worked great for that size tire and it turned out kind of cool lookin but it would never be able to carry a bigger one.

Fast forward to the 37's and the spare has been living strapped down in the cargo area which kind of bugged me. The brackets on the "bumper" I wasnt too fond of either. I ended up chopping off the two bent tubes that made up the old stinger carrier and used the pivots and locking mech to build the new one. The upright is 1/4" receiver tube and the two side tubes are from scrap from the scrap pile. Gusseted with 3/16 here and there with another piece of receiver at the top to accept the wheel mount.

Im gonna keep a close eye on it since that km2/steel rim combo weighs a ton but it doesnt move much more than the old carrier. There is some slight play at the tire mount because I used the pin/receiver to make the wheel and tire mount easy to get off but I expected that.

I just hope it doesnt fly off when Im going down the hwy and take out a vanload of nuns.....

Congrats, your "van" looks good and you have done a lot of work to it since you got it. Took a while to read the thread but it was definitely worth the read.
 
Spare is still there..... Thats cool. Even have a license plate light now.

Well shes been in the garage for a couple days now drying out. Getting ready to do the "fall body job" thats long overdue. So far Ive touched up a couple random spots and started to peel away the rust bubbles to expose whats left of the sheet metal lol. Its actually not as bad as I thought with the drivers fender (behind the wheel where it attaches to the body w 2 bolts) being the worst. Its been rattling for a couple months now since the area around the 2 bolts is totally rusted out. The bolt that attaches the fender to the inner fender is all thats keeping it from flapping around.

I plan to get rid of the rust, prime, and then attempt to color match some "hippo liner" and roll that on. I bought the liner and the paint for tinting it the other day and have painted a couple spots just to see how close it is. Not bad, a little darker than the blue slate metallic, but it should lighten up when I blend it (according to paint guy).

Also ordered up some "Land Cruiser" vinyl stickers to replace the rear hatch badge for the hell of it. Dude is gonna cut them out in graphite so it should match the bumpers ect.

Got a bunch done today. The problem spots were already primed so I fixed up the bottom of the fender (hackjob), taped it off, and mixed up the liner. Looks like a tub of clear jelly till you throw some paint in. While I was at it I redid the roof rack patches and the front of the hood. Ended up getting 6 full coats out of the kit and it seems to have gone on pretty thick. I let it dry 5 minutes between coats and that seemed to work decent.

No pics, that crap is messy as hell, but the color turned out a little more on the blue side.

Finally got it out of the garage today. I threw a "land cruiser" decal I had made on the hatch and 2 4500 decals on the rear 1/4's for the hell of it (the 4500's came up on the screen while we were looking for the LC logo and I couldnt resist. Got them done in graphite and they seem to blend in nicely.

The liner color def turned out more blue next to the "blue slate metallic" but thats what I get for eyeballing it.

I painted the toyota on the grille an off white due to boredom and resprayed the emblems on the hatch/tailgate. Polished up all the lights as well and it made a pretty decent improvement. Theres a pic of my roof rack hole/above the windshield jobbie and one of the crappy patch I made up for the bottom of the ds fender.

Mike, feel free to drop off your cruiser any time. Tell you what, Ill do you a straight trade, van for van lol. You can rock your old one for a couple years and Ill drive the diesel, all the while fixing it up.... Great deal, I swear.

Bumped into Kristan this week at work, small world, and she did recognize the wheels at work.
