Thanks for all the great info and pictures Dan. I know it's a little extra time to stop and take all those pictures. Great detail on those problem areas.
See you in one of those Northern Nevada spots...

These pics show the smog pump and alternator moved out of the way (I did not completely remove either); used the double hooked hold down strap to hold the smog pump up and out of the way. And the puller and crank s-belt puller.

I think you mean power steering pump.

One last comment/question;
In hours, how much time did you figure out it all took? "Active" time, not total time (beer, breaks, runs to the dealer, etc).

Probably 3-days total time wrenching, cleaning, etc. But I had to spend extra time dealing with the fan bracket issue and this includes the starter portion...like other's have said the next/second time will be considerably faster. I figured it saved me about over $2,000 for parts and labor when compared to taking it in to the dealer...plus I know it was done properly without any 'cover ups'.

It did involve extra time...but it was my 'turn' to give back ;) .

great writeup, will put in FAQ, thanks!

Great writeup!!! Thanks for the details. Always wonder what I should do on the wifes vehicles. Just listen out to the guy saying "you can do it!!!!"

My '99 came from Rochester NY. If not for having a completely corroded bolt holding the A/C compressor on it would have been ALOT easier and taken about 1/2 day less time! The rust/corrosion factor really gets old when doing your own work.

While I was at it I went ahead and replaced the starter. I did this at the turn-around point for the t-belt replacement procedure (when the water pump, thermostat housing, etc., were removed). Follow the FSM on this. You, as others have mentioned, will need to get yourself well into the engine bay to get this job done. FYI: I used a 22mm open end/box end wrench to remove the fuel line to intake manifold connection.
The fuel regulator nut is supposed to be 22 mm so I did get a 22 mm box end wrench and it seems big on my 2000 LX470. The attched picture shows the nut (back of the engine one ther driver side). Can someone confirm if it is 22 mm or what size it really is on a 2000? Thank you in advance.

That is the Fuel Pressure Pulsation damper according to Mr. T. The FSM recommends using a special service tool attached to a torque wrench to tighten it back up. (39ft/lbs w/o the SST). Maybe it's a non-standard size. The FSM also says to always use two new gaskets.

The Pressure regulator is a different part sitting on the Right hand fuel delivery pipe just under the engine cover.

I think I removed the fuel hose at the filter when doing my starter contacts.

Thanks for the advice.

When you say right hand side do you mean the passenger side?

My FSM is for a 2001 LX470 and shows two nuts holding down the regulator (not a signle big one as in the picture I attached). The fuel Pressure Pulsation damper that I am showing in the picture has a tube attached to it leading to the fuel filter so I think I should just disconnect the tube there and pull the cover off with the tube attached. I won't go at it again for three more days until I'm free again so this will give me some time to think it over a bit.

The starter is in. It fired up no problem. The only other issures were :
1. The hard bolt to get off the starter (driver side) did not need a flex-joint. I just used a deep 14mm socket and a ratchet (also, a short extension and a normal 14mm socket would work).
2. This bolt is just under the platic cover for the electronics as it is not clear in post 13 and 14.
3. I used electrical tape to hold the long nuts and bolts onto the ratchet to replace them for the plenum.
Thanks all again.

Hi,
I'm putting my starter back in and there are two plugs that have the same canons on them in the V-Bank just in front of the starter. One is white and the other is black. Which goes to which sensor? I'm getting old and relying on my memory too much it seems. I think the black plug goes to the driver side sensor.

Thanx!

Check post #14 on this thread for the pics. They may help.

Hi,
Yeah I was looking at that one earlier, but couldn't't see the one on the left. I'm assuming it is lighter colored, mine is white on the Left and black on the right i think. Just thought someone could confirm for sure. Hopefully black is on the passenger side because I'm dropping on the Manifold in a few minutes! Thanx!

Thanks for the great write up. We have 87k on my :princess: '99. So I'll be revisiting soon.

x2 on making this a part of the FAQ.

BUMP

Here's a cool bump to Dan's great thread.

This is the way the Toyota mechanics swap out the starter on a UZJ. He had it out, swapped and everything put back together in 45 mins flat. It was impressive (he's also one of the really good techs here).

Enjoy.
