I have a trashed 89 4Runner, V6, SR5, automatic that has its computer and was running before a rod went through the block.

I just came across a 91 4Runner, V6, SR5, automatic that I can pick up for near nothing. Only problem is its computer failed and the owner couldn’t afford to get it replaced. So he tossed it…and with that any identification to part numbers and such.

So my question is, will the 89 computer work in the 91???

Thanks,
Jerry D.

I would think so. In 93?????? they switched to an electric speedo, so that changed things. I would write down the number off your computer, and go down there with cash in hand! :D Also look at/ draw some pics of how the plugs go into the computer and the shapes, hopfully Toyota didn't change them when they switched from Gen 1 to Gen 2 4Runners. Good luck!

Compare the part number of the 89 computer with the part number on the 91 computer.

If they are the same part number, then they are the same computer and it shoudl work.

According to the Toyota EPC there were a bunch of ECU's used between 1988 and 1991.

89661-35121: 8711-8808
89661-35281: 8808-8903 (VN61)

89661-35191: 8808-8908 MTM
89661-35231: 8808-8908 ATM

89661-35351: 8908-9008 MTM
89661-35441: 8908-9008 ATM

89661-35511: 9008-9108 MTM
89661-35570: 9008-9108 ATM

Thanks for the input.
Wish the owner hadn't tossed out the computer, the ID number would have been nice to have.
So, for the money, I'll pick up the truck, swap them out and see what happens.

No, No, No, there is a place on the sticker of the computer that may say sumpn like 24/16/28 these indicate pins or pin#'s. The best thing first is to see if those #'s match if not QUIT find a cpu that the #'s match. Research=time waisted
This method will result in quickly finding a part possably already removed from vehical. I.E pull-a-part your loacal junkyard, craigslist etc.

FWIW I have swapped different part # 22Re computers with no problems. Doesn't mean that they'l all interchange, but some at least will without problems.

I have a 35351 in my '90 4Runner. The check engine light is on, and pointing to an exhaust sensor, which I replaced. I also rebuilt the top end. The light is still on, and the dealer wants $85 to tell me what's wrong. Is there a cheaper way to find out the problem?

Steve,

Autozone will read the codes no charge.

We're way past that. It's an OBD1 anyway. The code is a 21 -

According to
http://www.off-road.com/toyota/tech/codes/

It's a:

"OXYGEN SENSOR SIGNAL/OXYGEN SENSOR HEATER SIGNAL

OPEN OR SHORT IN OXYGEN SENSOR OR OXYGEN SENSOR SIGNAL"

But the oxygen sensor is new. That's why we're thinking it's the ECU itself.

Got a wiring diagram by any chance?

Thanks...

I picked up an 89661-35350 (vs. 35351) and it works, in my 9001. (Yahooooo)
