I'm thinking of buying an 88 4runner that had the motor takin out(22re of obviously by post name). I was wondering if my 89 1/2 pick up's 22re would mount onto the runner and if so is this a good build for a mudder/trailblazer?? Also what could I do thats really cheap to help bring it up to good standards for it.

Thank you all ahead of time for ur comments and advice all is welcomed and accepted

The engine itself will work (block, head, timing cover, oil pan). However, you have to either use all the 88 sensors and ECU or use all the 89 sensors and ECU. The 88 model year uses a unique plug on the fuel injector and is not compatable with the 89.

I would take your 89 motor and take it down to a long block. Then put all the 88 sensors and fuel injectors on it along with the 88 intake manifold and AFM. The exhaust manifold is the same.

If you want to make it more road worthy, put a new timing chain kit, head gasket, water pump, front and rear oil seals and get your head check with new valve seals. Then your good to go...

Or...

The '89+ intake and throttle body is much improved, and worth the swap. There is a thread here and on lots of other places on the web about the upgrade. I am doing this now.

What you would need to do is leave the later intake and throttle body attached, but swap over the injectors, sensors, TPS, and wiring harness from your '88.

Thank you both a bunch I don't have many Toyota items but will be inheriting my fathers extra stuff as he has a Toyota race car for a derby running a 22r 20r hybrid, but I don't get that, his tranny is a 5 speed and it's a 79 corona stationwagon I might be wrong on the year

x2. It's pretty easy since this way you're still keeping your original harness, injectors, and basically everything else electrical but you're getting the "latest and greatest" mechanical parts.

I also agree with Snobdds. Go ahead and do some of the major PM items while the engine is out.

Would i need the sensors for it to run properly or can I sacrifice a couple n save time because I don't have emissions where I live n I only need the heat guage and I'll add an oil pressure and ideas I don't kno how many sensors r on this truck because I've only had to put in an alternator and front seal, which means I've never been elbow deep

It's EFI, so all the sensors are needed for the computer to work properly.

Now getting rid of the emissions is a totally differnt beast.
