i have a 86 toyota with a 22 re fuel injected engine and has sat for about a year without starting it and now it wont start it turns over fine but just wont fire.

Don't assume something sinister. Usually it's something pretty simple.

  • Check fuses, especially the EFI and ING fuses (fuse block, driver's side kick panel).
  • Confirm spark. Pull a plug and ground it while a buddy turns over the engine. You can also hook up a timing light to each wire and confirm they are getting juice.
  • Check your grounds. Back of the engine to the firewall. I think there is another from the passenger side fender to the block (??). Seems like I'm missing one, like at the power steering pump, or something like that.
  • Fuel. Short the diag box fuel pump test terminals. I think you have the service box at the fuse block under the hood, next to the battery. Use a paper clip and short terminals +B and FP. You should hear the fuel pump run in the tank with the engine off/key on. You can crack the banjo bolt at the cold start injector and see if you have high pressure.
  • Ya, cap and rotor. And make sure the dizzy is lined up correctly.
  • On the sinister side, there are a bunch of splices in the engine harness to the injectors. Those splices are just simple crimps, and the corrode. Usually though it's just one that fails, and the truck will still run.
Good luck. Report back.

@pappyThe ground you are thinking of goes from the wiring harness to the lower intake plenum - it's a great anti-theft device.

There's another ground in the alternator harness. Big ring terminal that is supposed to be on one of the engine mount bolts.
