I have no idea what the purpose of this is for. I could not find anything in the FSM either. Looks like it was specifically made for the truck though.

It's aftermarket, not factory. It's a truss. I always attributed it to something useless a company sold to part you from your money. I think the only value it has is the "coolness" factor ... if your into that sort of thing.

From the 1997 Downey catalog, "There are many brands of trusses on the market that are 'design ineffective' and are apparently sold for looks only. Our truss has undergone dynamic testing where a housing without it flexed, then sprung back to .017 of an inch permanently deformed."

I guess if you were into jumping your truck they might have value. But on an off-road truck the only use it has is to reduce your ground clearance.

Thanks Pappy! That is hilarious! I had never seen one before. There is no way that little bar would keep the axle housing from bending. Taking it off right now. By the way, I bookmarked a page of yours that you made when you owned an 85 pickup. Lots of good info. Do you know if the guy that made your bumpers is still around?

Front or rear? The front bumper on the xcab was an AllPro. It looks like they are still making a version of the front bumper that I had.

The rear was a Stout Equipment, which I also have on the 4Runner. Is the guy still around? Absolutely, but he isn't making stuff any more. He just moved back to ABQ from New York not too long ago. MUD user name over at HDC is Dumpolina, aka Grant.
