OK, The rig is an '84 stock 22R w/ a 5sp. It has cruise control and all of the original smog still attached. The auto choke seems to function correctly as well as the accelerator plunger. The bucking happens when you step on the pedal trying to accelerate, or going up a hill. If you are delicate with the throttle it won't buck/missfire. The backfiring happens generally when the engine is spoiled up and then you release the throttle and hold the gear to ride down a hill. If it's dark you can see a flame out of the tailpipe. When I play with the throttle with the air cleaner off, sometimes the backfire comes out of the carb, but everything seems fine when it's parked/idling.
I've done a lot of research on this issue, and also have been ignoring it for quite a while. From reading what Pin_Head has to say, it seems like there's a fuel starvation issue. The FSM lists vacuum lines as a first place to check. I keep checking and think I've finally found the one line that was unplugged, but that doesn't seem to fix it. There's a new fuel filter and running the fuel line out of a jar of fuel was not very definitive (it seemed to run fine, but I could still taste a miss somewhere).
