Good afternoon,

I am still making progress on my 8274 but i need some guidance. I have a contactor and a 3 wire controller (see pic of identical controller) but i need a 3 wire plug that will work with both my contactor and my controller.

Anyone using a 3 wire plug like this one? It is warn part number 16296.

Do you think it will work?

Not bad. - thanks for sharing.

I called warns customer service and they wanted me to buy an $100 part just to get the socket/plug and said they dont sell them separately.

Anyone else find a durable controller and socket that would be worthy of a rebuilt 8274?

The rest of my winch build has progressed nicely but i'm still road blocked with this controller/plug socket dilemma. If anyone else has some wisdom on the matter don't be bashful. I did find a four wheeler magazine article on the subject and warns controller scored the best but there didnt appear to be much variance between all products included in the comparison.

After quite a bit of internet searching i've found that the superwinch controller is the only controller and compatible socket plug combo marketed together. At least the only one i can see.

I really really thought Warn would have a solution to such a small problem when afterall i'll gladly pay fair market value for any warn controller and compatible socket! I just dont want to buy parts that I dont need and these days i shouldnt have to. Yep i too can dream up scenarios of why they dont market a socket plug for their controllers but at the same time if thats what the brain trust of Warn has decided is a necessary component of their biz model then so be it.

I'll go superwinch controller until something better comes around.

Bummer for sure. I like Warn winches and have 3...BUT for some reason they seem to be getting heavy handed and putting their customers over a barrel, so to speak.

They no longer will sell brushes for their 8274, must buy the whole motor with the brushes attached. They won't make a $2 part avaliable and sell it for $10-20. They make you buy a new motor for $2-300. And now your problem. I hope they hear from people like us and maybe re-think.

On to your issue...I would think that a 'real' electrical guy could fix you up in short order. I don't know squat about electricity, but for some it's a way of life. Got anyone like that in your circle of friends??

Is that a Warn controller? It doesn't look the same as the 3 pin on my older controller.

I've used the super winch socket on my 8274, and it works fine with the stock warn controller and an aftermarket one, but my pins are arranged in a triangle like this. Seems like all the newer plugs are interchangable between brands.

You could also wire directly to interior switches and skip the outside control. Much more convenient to use too.

I idapted my controls to a three wire trailer lite ends. Cheap and available anywhere. The remote isn't pushing any current, any three wire will work.

Actually I have the plugs you need. PM me if you want

Thanks.

I have the plug socket and controller ready to go. Just need to finish the project and as this point i’m ready to assemble. Thanks for your offer.

Well almost ready.

I still need a list of wires (gauge included as well as terminal hardware) that are needed to wire the contactor and get it working. I’ve seen some pictures in the past but never a listing.

The control wires on the contactor don't carry any real current, just signal. You can use most any wire gauge that you have handy - I think I used like 14 AWG but I don't remember.

The power wires from the battery to the contactor and the contactor to the motor need to be heavy, I would think a minimum of 2 AWG (what Warn originally used IIRC) but I used 0 gauge I'm pretty sure. It was a tight fit under the cover. The 8274 draws a LOT of current on start-up, 500+ amps, so you want good heavy power cables.
