@Engineer8000, Other than being dirty, I think mine looks okay? I cleaned it with electronic cleaner but could not get the brownish stain off. It looks worse in the photo than in my hand... I tested the FCS following the manual and it appears to be functioning properly.

That brown goo on the bottom is flux left from original fabrication. I use alcohol in a spray bottle to remove it then rinse with DI water and blow dry with low pressure oil free air. I also remove the brown glue on the top side used to hold the caps in originally during wave soldering. It can become conductive over time.

Several of the connector solder joints show signs of cracking. I usually remove the old solder then resolder, but you could probably get by with reflowing them. I would reflow all the connector solder joints, sometimes hard to see.

A fully functioning Computer Emissions board makes a world of difference when trying to pass smog in Kalif. Particularly in the areas where testing is most stringent, like L.A. AQMD and pretty much the areas where one finds an abundance of nose-rings.

Engineer8000 sells repaired ones, part 89550-60130, 81-87 FJ40-60, if you didn't know. I think he replaces components, too, as necessary.

here in MT, I thought it was any rig over 10 years qualified for permanent plates, pay about double yearly registration and you're good until it is gone, all my rigs have permanent plates

I thought CA was cracking down on out of state registrations?? or is it just the high dollar rigs and rv's. it is good for MT as we get the registration dollars and never see the rig

I think the odds of getting caught are low if it is not a daily driver. Several friends have gotten away with it for years. Half the high end cars at the local cars and coffee have out of state plates and the cops that are there don't seem to care.

California actually relies on jealous neighbors dropping a dime on vehicles with out-of-state plates that don't see out of state very much.

I bit the MT bullet for my 82 FJ43. It works, it was easy, and I don’t feel too bad about it. I was thinking recently I’d maybe go for the newer model smog plan in a few years. From what I’ve read, I can swap in a 3FE and as long as I keep all the emissions gear from the 1989 FJ62, I should be able to register it in CA. The 3FE was already in the plan, the smog stuff was not.

The only upside, other than following the rules, would be resale value. I think.

It’s cheap in Arizona to own a classic too, but I don’t think you want to get pulled over as a resident in CA and your vehicle has out of state plates….

With AZ, if you get inexpensive “Historical” plates, which are cheap, and you get collector’s insurance, there is no requirement for smog testing.

It’s a great deal. But I live here.

Thought there was more to it than just Historical Plates. I haven't registered a non OBD2 vehicle in the parts of AZ that require emissions for over twenty years. Think that predated the classic registration. Remember my 89 FJ62 was two year but my 68 FJ40 was annually when I had to emission them. Now the cost for them is right around $60 for five years.

Around 1989 or 1990 Arizona had a rolling twenty years for emissions. I remember having a year or two on my 68 with no emissions in Phoenix. In 1993 I got an historical plate when it turned twenty-five. I still had to go thru emission. In 2002 the 68 left Phoenix and hasn't been back. Gave up the historical plate after a couple years to save the $25.

so as long as you don't piss off a neighbor, you'll be good.

what out of staters are doing, is registering a LLC with the state, get an address, and register the vehicle under the LLC,
I was at DMV 1 day a year ago and there was a lady inline who knew most everybody who worked there. She got to the counter, was all done, then got back in line. I chatted with her a bit, she was registering rigs for LLCs. She could only do 3 at a time at the window. She spent most of a day there once a week or 1 day every 2 weeks. This is just in 1 county, we have 56 counties in the state.
I know some of the smaller counties, less staffed, were getting overwhelmed with the amount of title work.

I know CO was starting to crackdown on out state registrations with large fines.

Just not sure how it being an LLC versus personal gets handled.

Are you required to have a mailing address beside a PO box to have an LLC in Montana? Could be wrong but to house vehicle in California with a company from another state the LLC would have to be licensed to do business in California. Not sure but think in Arizona vehicles owned by a company are required to have commercial plates.

no commercial plates are not required here
as I don't know, renewals need to be sent somewhere, maybe the company helping set up the LLC does all that along with the paperwork.
if a person has a "company" car and with the age on the web working remotely, is the company technically doing business in another state.

very grey area, and some states are playing catchup

they may get more hits on the out of state plates if there was a bounty on them, but trying to get money back from a broke state could be futile

Fines could more than pay for the bounty as long as some judge decide not to follow the fine structure.

Also by your reasoning we all need to worry. US has been in the red as long as I can remember. Just this last year over a trillion dollars of new debt has been added.
