My 4Runner will spank all the 100's and 80's :-)

Since I recently started wheeling a 1st gen pickup after several years of wheeling my 80, I will certainly agree with that statement. My mini can already outdo the 80 and it's only runnning on 33s (80 is on 35s). But while the Mini can outwheel the 80, the 80 wins hands down in comfort both on and off-road.

I'm going shut up now before a 80 vs 100 vs mini-truck/4Runner fight gets started ;-)

Start a new thread Bob! :D

So do you think a well equiped 100 will out-wheel a D110? Oh, snap.........

I have some awesome Rover buddies. Most have Disco's, a few have Rangies, one has a D90 and a few have Series rigs. We share respect for each other.

(BTW: I know you were kidding when you asked. ;) )

I will say one thing, those Disco's can go. Leo's D90 is amazing. I'd luv to see a D110 but haven't. Great history with those Rovers. I feel fortunate though that I ended up with a reliable brand.

But would it out wheel a well equiped D110?

Reasonable ground clearance?

That's pretty cool..:D

Too bad they're not stock Rover axles. Volvo? `Mog? Can't quite tell. Definately portals, though. And yes, very cool!

Stock LR axles can have drop boxes just bolted sraight on I believe. Some kits have been available every now and then, I think Pinzgauer drop boxs fit.

Showdown? No contest. While the 100 might get a "pretty ribbon" it won't beat out 80's on the trail. :)

Heh, that quote is going in my sig line. %$#@^

The axles on the 110 are Volvo Laplander 303. I was trying to find an artical on potal axle Landrovers but ca not find it and all my past magazines that have been collected over the years have unfortunatly gone to the municipal tip.

To revive this thread - Truck Trend (Motor Trend's cheesy truck rag) rated the 100 series last in a SUV shootout - and also finished a 4Runner article with the final sentence 'Who needs a Land Cruiser'

My brother's and my observation on this (he has a '94, I have a '95) are that the 100 series lacks the three things that make an '80 series what it is - solid axles, a unique engine, and lockers front and rear. So, a 100 series, on paper, resembles a very expensive new 4Runner - 4.7l v-8, IFS, and a rear locker. I believe the distinction that used to make a Land Cruiser a Land Cruiser is now mostly gone. I have owned/own, an FJ40, 45, 55, 60, and 80 - so I understand heritage, etc.

I'm sure the 100 series is a capable 'wheeler and very tight, luxurious, etc. - but how long will people pay the premium for it over a 4Runner, when it no longer has the uniqueness? And, gad, 5 lug nuts? ;-)

Thoughts?

Steve,

My thoughts:

1) :flipoff2: for reviving this thread...

2) They have sold 15,000+ combined units of the LC and LX470 since 1998. Every year.

3) 5x150mm lug pattern is bigger and stronger than the 6 lug pattern. Sorry to disappoint you.

4) Lockers can be added for those of use who want/need them. BTW, how many of your Cruisers came equipped with factory lockers? That's what I thought.

The LC/LX is bigger than a 4runner and appeals to a different market. They are profitable for Toyota still. Tooling costs were paid for in the first couple years so now it's a low volume, high profit model. Nothing wrong with that from a business standpoint.

Totally different buyers/customers Steve.

Most people buy 4Runner to get a nice SUV with Toyota quality.

For the buyers who want something larger, the Sequoia is the top choice of course. Bigger, Toy quality and far less than a Cruiser. Makes sense for90% of this class.

For those upscale buyers that want to drive the expensive luxo vehicles, they'll opt for a Cruiser or even more popular...an LX470 so they can drive a "Lexus".

Things in the US haven't changed. Most people who bought new 80's bought them for the same reasons 100-owners do because they wanted the prestige. Back then though there was no Sequoia to compete for the sale.

Now, years later people are snagging 80's because they're awesome wheelers. Today, people are building 100's more than ever for the same purpose. Depending on the trail-type, one can exceed the other in overall capability, or capacity, and/or overall durability.

The 80 has two things going for it:
1. Smaller size
2. More front articulation
These only pay off in themost extreme situations.

Otherwise, the 100 clearly excels (though some purists will not agree/admit this) in almost every area.

The only thing I don't understand about your brother's comment is the unique engine comment? The engine in the 100 is leaps and bounds superior to the one in the 80.  There are many showing up for sale with 175K and even 200+K that run perfect. So if they're equally durable, then the V8 has every other advantage (power, smoothness, etc).
