I read through those threads and they are very helpful for folks thinking about window tinting (which I am). Unfortunately I'm not having much luck searching for photos of 80s with windshields that have a shade band. I like the idea in theory but need a visual to help. I'll also check if the shop can help me.

No shade band on top, and the glass has been perfect zero issues I was a bit hesitant going with aftermarket, but can tell zero differences been over a year and 15k miles no issues plenty of highway miles glass is holding up strong. For the differences in sun conditions I don’t notice a thing, it honestly looks like any other windshield.

So I had a dump truck dump a bunch of rocks and it peppered my windshield and they said I have to go the cheap route including Non OEM gasket and I'm not for that I just happened to have an OEM one,but I got a quote from safelite and they said they can't guarantee that they could safely install it without tearing it and if so it's my problem and I'd need to replace it

I used Fuyao for the glass, with the OEM gasket. It installed fine.

You can order aftermarket glass with any color shade band you want, or have your local glass installer do it for you. I just had this done last week. FWIW, I would not let Safelite touch any of my Land Cruisers, especially my 80s.

I'm definitely not using Safelite even though I'll have to pay a bit more for the local glass shop. Do you happen to have any photos of your windshield with the shade band?

So I had to get quotes for my damaged windshield,and I mentioned to the guy,I happened to have the replace OEM gasket and preferred to use it,his reaction was yeah we can try to use,it but if we tear it,that's on you,I told the guy Oh ok then we are done . Here's another question replace or reuse the gasket a glass guy said the stock one is fine to reuse,and I'm not sure I'd go that route,

There's no way anyone's getting the glass out without damaging the seal. Once you see the process you'll understand why.

If you the guy you're talking to won't use your OEM seal and the service manual instructions, you have to find another guy. It's not that hard and any reputable installer won't have a problem with it.

FWIW, I've had very good luck with Dupont BetaSeal U-418. It's the closest chemically to the OEM sealant used in the factory installations, which you cannot get anymore.

Note: you'll need to remove the wipers and cowl panel to remove the glass. If your installer will come to you, most will, and you have this done for him, you'll get a better job. It also gives you an opportunity, while the glass is out and he's prepping the seal/new glass, to address any rust problems:

Just had mine done today. Guy had no problem using the seal I brought him, which was oem. I bought the seal years ago as the windshield has always leaked. He had no problem doing it the Fsm way and was very familiar with the process. Told him only reason I’m changing is cause it leaks, even though it was cracked. Dropped off at 8am and he was done by 3. Fixed little rust on the top. I did pull the wipers and cowl for him. Price was 385 with the glass.

DIY or taking it somewhere? Mine is scheduled for next week, also looking forward to being done. How are you handling the rear + defroster? I pretty much gave up on the rear.

I found a rear window, and I will pay someone to do it I have a new gasket

i recently replaced my windshield with a OE gasket and Fuyao glass w/ blue band. Glass guy sourced the glass, I provided the gasket

this thread reminds me that my rear defroster doesn't work. there is power at the wires, but i haven't been able to figure out where the break is. annoying in the dead of winter for sure.

I recently had my glass replaced in VA. no trouble at all. i did NOT go through my insurance or their chosen installer, Safelite. mostly b/c I was recommended by my local TLCA chapter to use a small local shop. cost me somewhere around $500 all in. he even cleaned up and treated some corrosion that was happening in the glass channel, and he was WELL versed in the Toyota install procedure.

i sourced a new gasket from Toyota of Richmond VA, but could have also let the glass shop source a gasket, which I think was aftermarket. i thought it best to go Mr T.
glass shop sourced the glass. Mr T glass is no longer available, as you know

my glass shop does all the work for the local toyota (and other) dealers. he keeps his own small shop and does installs there on days he's not at a dealer. so maybe call or visit your local dealer and inquire who THEY use.
