How can I tell if my '84 FJ60 is late enough to be able to take an 80 series steering box?

Is the mounting bolt pattern square or slightly parallelogram? Square - no; bolts slightly offset from square - yes.

Looks very square. So rebuild is my only option?

Ya, mines square - can I get the guts/gearing rebuilt into my FJ60 box? And where would I go to have that done?

Yes you can get the reseal kit and rebuild it. Personally, I would do it yourself. It's fun, rewarding, and less downtime. Plenty of how to videos and help threads here to walk you through it.

If you insist on farming it out, West Texas Off-road does good work I hear.

I'm not good with gears ... or seals ...

Lol... I have an 83, same box as you. Here's everything laid out on the table. If you can put a condom on, you can change an o-ring seal. You can do this.
