Hey guys, I went to Chris's shop earlier today to clarify some things and check out his work. This guy does really good work and his welding is excellent, he has a lot of experience under his belt and does quality work.
- I had an extensive discussion whether to weld on the sliders or drilling through the frame for bolts, he said welding the sliders onto the frame is stronger than the bolts as the bolts will get loose over time, if it ever needs to be removed, one can always cut it and grind it down. I don't have enough experience to agree or disagree but it make some sense, I don't know if the heat from welding it is hot enough change the metallurgy of the frame compromising structural integrity. The same issue with structural integrity came up when we talked about drilling into the frame, I thought that once you drill the frame of a vehicle , it automatically becomes a salvage title, but that concern is for another chapter.
I'm leaning towards welding onto the frame to avoid drilling, the process is a bit easier as well. This is something we need to clarify, what we want as a group or individual, so I would appreciate if everyone could chime in and participate.

- I also discuss about payment, he clearly stated he need half cash deposit for him to start, he will not take paypal or credit card. If you are not comfortable with this method, you can contact him to discuss other methods of payment. For the folks that are far away or don't have time to come by his shop, I can help out if you paypal gift me to avoid charges or if you want to pay the charges, that's up to you, I will withdraw cash to pay him on your behalf.

- It will take him about 2 weeks to get all 5 sets finished as soon as he get the deposit, personally I'm not in a huge rush to get this done, but once I start something I want to get it done as soon as possible so I can get started on other things.

This is his shop location and contact info, if you have any questions you can contact him directly and update the thread if you have helpful info.

I definitely want bolt-on with brackets or u bolts.

-Tom

I'm ready to send the deposit if he can accommodate drop brackets and bolt-on.

Tom, if you have time, it's easier to meet up with him and show him in person, he only worked on 1 or two land cruisers. Mostly tacomas, jeep, land rovers, tundras, ect. I can meet up with you if you go on Thursday or Friday, that way we can compare vehicles and combine ideas.

I work Wednesdays, I'm also off Mondays if that works for you.

I wonder if I can fab that skid into my current setup. I just had new cats installed and had them flipped to tuck up under a bit.

That's a pretty sweet mod, can you share who did it and how much for the labor? I don't have plans of buying a new cat, going to use the old one if possible. Stock position hangs really low and very visible. If you want cat protection only, I'm sure he can make one for you.

I don't see why it would be necessary to drill into the frame. We can just use u-bolts that fit around the frame rail and bolt to the slider mount.

tenajalukas: I tried to PM you back but your inbox is full.
For him to get started, he requires a deposit from interested parties. No one have said anything yet :/
SO what's up guys? are we going to go through with this? I think this is a great deal, he makes good products but no one making move. I have about 5 guys that are really interested but no words of deposit or anything.

That's a good point, you can install however you want it's up to you. :D

Any word on skid plate?

That for bellypan type skid or just cat protection. I'll pm ya on wheels.

That's for the belly pan just like the one in the link, cat protection comes with the sliders for 425

So most people want bolt on, you will have to install it yourself. The reason being he does not want to hold the liability of drilling into your frame, check out the kit int he link below. I'm thinking U brackets just like the pic will be awesome, 2 bolts on top and you are done.

Right now, I'm hearing that they are weld on and if I want them bolted on, I'll have to fab my own mounting solution. That's the reason there are no commitments. You said so yourself, most of us want bolt-on.

I want to commission a set of these sliders, but the reason I'm paying someone else to do it is because I don't have the time to figure out how to adapt them, mount them and then source the appropriate hardware...and we still haven't established if they will be compatible with drop brackets.

My understanding was that these were going to be bolt-on ever since prices were established. All we need is for the fabricator to measure a frame and drill some holes in the mounting plates and provide the appropriately sized u-bolts.

Short of that, this is not him making bolt-on sliders for an 80. That's making some universal sliders and us trying to figure out how to adapt it to our trucks. Like I said, if he has a bolt on slider that will accommodate drop brackets, I will be the first to put down a deposit.

I'm still working on the bolt on method to avoid drill or welding, i posted that link bc I think it's a good solution to use the U brackets rather than U bolts, that's just my opinion, I don't have any experience with U bolts but it doesn't seem as strong.
