Got my Scout installed in my 80, love it!

I received mine and it will be getting installed over the weekend. Great attention to detail as I have come to expect from Wit's End's products. I wish I had taken a picture of packaging before I ripped into it.

Only thing I would do different is make the key removable in the unlocked position. I'd like to have access to the box while driving and not be bothered by a key, then lock it up when I get out of the vehicle.

I'm 50/50 on this. I'm leaning towards the current setup being idiot proof. Never that doubt when you are away from your truck you forgot to lock it. I can't see any functional in there I need while driving and honestly pretty much need the key to open it anyway (like grab handle)

mine .00001 cent.

In Florida you can keep a loaded handgun in your car without concealed carry because it falls under the castle doctrine. The only stipulation is it needs to be in a box with a lid (does not need to be locked). I do see the point that it would be hard to open without the key. I guess a quick disconnect on my landcruiser key ring would work. Then just keep the key in the lock box when driving.

I don't want Joey's thread to turn into a gun debate, but if anything a meaningful discussion on the use of this excellent product! Here's what the California DOJ handgun study guide has to say and what Joey has as a good disclaimer on use of the product on his site.

It is illegal for any person to carry a handgun concealed upon his or her person or concealed in a vehicle without a license issued pursuant to Penal Code section 26150. (Pen. Code, § 25400.) A firearm locked in a motor vehicle’s trunk or in a locked container carried in the vehicle other than in the utility or glove compartment is not considered concealed within the meaning of the Penal Code section 25400; neither is a firearm carried within a locked container directly to or from a motor vehicle for any lawful purpose. (Pen. Code, § 25610.)

I have to wonder if this product would qualify here in CA. I'm concerned about the wording of "utility or glove compartment" specifically (bold emphasis added above). Wonder if in our cruisers if the law would consider the center console, even with this lockable compartment a "utility" compartment. Could be a big gray area.

I brought these lockboxes to the attention of the local PD for just this reason. For them, the bolted down locked container satisfied CA law. I've since sold to at least two CA officers that I know of and they concurred.

I am NO expert. But so far everyone I've spoken with in law enforcement gives it the green light. In practice...who knows. It's CA so not much of an excuse is really needed to cause a problem.

Agree with the 'who knows, it's Ca'!!! Guy at Turners yesterday wouldn't touch the question. Need to check the dimensions of what I just purchased to your mini. In my 10 day waiting period now.

Haha I went to my local gun shop and showed them what I was building. This was last year. They loved it but didn't like it was vehicle specific. I asked if they thought it would work for CA law and both of them clammed up and only said they are NOT commenting on that.

Odd.

Odd. I don't think so. It'd be legal advice they shouldn't dispense. Wasn't surprised at all with no response.

How many minis are left?

I have about 6 I think BUT the only ones I have left don't have the flush locks. Bunch of people wanted combi locks but none ordered. So I had some cams made that would fit the Medeco lock in the raised position. Basically it just means the lock doesn't sit flush, the bezel sits proud about 3/16"

Do you have any that would fit a '92?

I think you should buy banner space on the CHP's website.:p

I think its been long enough. After enough people have been bugging me, I'm doing another run of the Scout LockBox but only because I think I have a metal shop that is FAR easier to work with. They will be taking entire responsibility for the production but its gonna cost more per unit. But since I've promised so many people I'd honor the price, pre-orders will still be $160 for the first 25 units. After that the price adjusts to $175.

I just replaced my '91 center console with a '94 center console. The center consoles are exactly the same between the years. Why will the lock boxes only fit '93-'97? Just curious.

@NLXTACY any chance the LOCK BOX-MINI, 80 SERIES (93'-97') will make it back into production (sorry if this was answered already), I'm up in the great white north so the chances of the stars aligning for all all the wish list items being in stock at the same time (save on shipping) are as likely as our prime minster growing a pair.

Not at this time. This production is a big experiment with this new shop. If I were to do the mini again it would be later in the year and only if there was a demand. It's tough sitting on that much stock :(

That's very unusual. I have two 91 consoles and both are identical to the 62 Series and the size is a little bit off. It looks close but the casting size is different. Perhaps you have a late 91? Does it have an armrest lid or just the console cover?
