Bilstein 5100
My main concern is the length of the shocks. I need shocks now, but don't want to buy shocks again in 2 months or so when I order the slee kit. Since I won't be wheeling like this, will it be fine?
@wct49 any info on length that I would need for the billies? I had the 5125s on my 4Runner and liked them
I'd need eye adapters with the bilsteins though :/
Save your money and ride rough for two months. Why waste the money on shocks you're just gonna take off?
Bilstein 5100's are the way to go. No shock adaptors needed they are bolt on.
Why a 4" kit? 2.5" and 315's on a locked 80 will take you all the places you'd want to go in a full bodied rig.
FYI: OME L shocks came with my 5" OME Comp kit and are way to short for the lift. I had 3/4"-1" of droop. At 4" you might be better off with the L shock than I was but there are better options out there.
Not quite sure wtf turtle dragging is but judging by those pics the issue you're having is the tires are rubbing on the frame rails and wheel opening. There is way more to a functional suspension than height. Limit your rear travel by dropping the bumpstop and see how it works.
Are you still running swaybars?
You're not going to get a lot of flex out of the front of an 80 unless you 3-link it and run coilovers. Front suspension works just fine for most off road adventures.
Lowering bumpstops will decrease travel but if you're rubbing hard the travel is wasted and killing momentum.
I'm thinking that what you have currently is a nice setup. I like the bumpstop suggestion and maybe sliders and skids. Going higher looks like it opens up a larger can of worms than I'd want in a daily. You end up looking at 37s, regearing to 4.88, D.C. Driveshafts, panhards etc. and for what? I'm not putting my daily driver anywhere that stuff is necessary. It looks good though. These girls have big rears and they're gonna drag at times. You have the bumper for that.
Could I accomplish the same with some like 3 inch springs. Castor correction plates. And adjustable panhards? Everything I've read online said once you get into the 3 inch plus range you get driveline angle probs. I guess adjustable rear links can fix the rear pinion angle back to parallel. But the front is kinda a do it and see type thing
With an 80, get used to dragging the ass end on lots of stuff, its just part of life if you wheel it. You could sell the current rear and get a 4xlabs rear to gain some departure angle. What is your current hub to flare measurement on all 4 corners?
All of the 80 series I lift for customers that want to run a 315 tire I use a set up that has been tried and true. Yes you can fit a 37" with this set up but travel will have to be limited in the rear. Will give you a good ride on road and will be functional off-road:
OME 285J Front Springs
OME 2863 Rear Springs
Bilstein 5100 Shocks
OME Steering Stabilizer
3* Caster Bushings
Sometimes there will be a driveline vibration from the front shaft, sometimes there won't. In my experience a DC driveshaft only prolongs the vibration 10-15MPH, use at your own will. Castor plates are not needed at that height as they will over-correct.
At the end of the day it's your truck do what ever floats your boat. Just wanted to give you a little knowledge and recommendations that I've picked up over the years.
