Average 5.3 dropout from 99-06 is $1500ish
6.0 is $2000ish
LS1 $1800+++++

Mileage is the biggest factor on price as is aluminum engine block (LS series and HO truck). I'm a fan of an iron block myself. Don't let mileage fool you these are good engines. Personally I would not use a 2007 or newer they are more expensive and have DOD which kills motors. If you do end up with a 2007+ buy the DOD delete kit.

Remember if you are using the stock case you will need a 2wd 4L60 or a 4wd 4L80 otherwise you will be swapping output shafts. There is a 2wd 4L80 that you can use that has splines all the way up to the back of the trans.

Where have you found info about the DD delete kit? is this basically a set of new lifters and re-program the ECM? I've not yet started looking at options/configurations...etc. I have a 6.0 in my GM 2500HD...works well, even though it has the DD BS...I had an older 2500 with 6.0 which did not have DD (07 model). I prefer not to have it, but in newer trucks there is no choice on gas burner. Lets keep in touch....and I'm all about learning good solutions from others. I'll be using a stock engine or if anything potentially mild mods...nothing serious...I want it idle all day and run under load forever without overheat or other issues. In my case its probally going to be a mild trail rig and just something to cruise around with and go on some trips with...

Edit...I found some more info....on the web, see where summit and others sell parts. Whats not clear to me is if you remove teh DD crap off 6.0 engine...do you need to swap cams....either to an OEM 6.0 cam from when DD did not exist or to other type cam that does not interact with DD.

I've not sourced a engine or transmission yet so I'm surfing for info...I do like how the 4L80 shifts and I believe it pretty much bullet proof...my friend says its a good bit larger in size and weight than the L60 version..

Bossman, please educate me on that truck. I've been looking for something "different," and not only could that be a cool truck, it'd be a great trip!

So, they made an 80 (81) body style in 1990?
Being a 1990 model, would that have a semi-float rear with drum brakes?
Electric lockers on a 1990 model?
He said 16" wheels, but aren't those the same as an FJ80 (15")?

As you can tell, I'm just not that familiar with an HDJ. Anyone else have any thoughts?

UPDATE: Nevermind, I just noticed it's RHD.

I'd have to have @beno advise on parts availability and value/condition, but that looks like a heck of a deal. Maybe someday...

Do it! You'll actually be able to pass on hills/mountains at elevation.

It makes the wagon feel "right".

Lou is about to spend some $$$ on this truck to sell it

You could probably get it for $8000 before he does.

96 with 217,000. Locked. @Bodean @under_psi

Just for a comparable...

I sold a stock '97LX w/190-sh K miles a few months ago for $6500, and probably could have gotten my asking price of $7000, but decided to go with a sure thing.

I had SOR Tuff Duck covering the similar looking front seats.

He may get $8k for it, I've seen them go for more, but that price generally commands very good condition, so he may want to spend any pennies carefully. Money spent on PM isn't going to gain him much of any on the resale.
