dowels break?

dowels break?

When i broke the studs in the front axle. The dowels were kind of twisted and tore in the hub. When the rear broke. I thought the same would have happened. But the dowels were just missing. No damage to the rear hub at all. It was like they just fell out.

I ordered new dowels from the dealership and ordered new ARP studs from Front Range offroad /Diamond axle. I called them after i could not get in touch with cruiseroutfitterrs ( at Baja), metal tech , ACC ( closed on mondays), then Slee recommended them since Slee doesn 't sell ARP. Good price. $151 to my door for front and rear hubs.

dowels break?

We have come to the conclusion that the dowels does not help with the strength on this setup but only serve to align the axle to the hub. They keep the drive flange, or the rear axle shaft flange centered on the hub instead of relying on the cone washers and studs to do so.

They are brittle and will easily break. Check for yourself. Put one in a vice and hit it with hammer sideways. It will snap right off.

What is more, they are a slight press fit on one side but not the other. In most cases where you break them, you will see that the hole was ovalized and does not fit the dowels anymore.

Joe, our tech runs a Toyota buggy with a 80 series hybrid axle in the front. Having had to deal with this issue for years, he decided to try something.

He has removed the dowels and studs and machined the hub to take flywheel bolts. He has 40" tyres, a 4.7l v8 and they do some crazy stuff with the buggy. Ever since he has done that, they do not loosen up anymore and he does not break studs anymore.

I would believe you but I was wheeling with someone that lost one of their dowels and attempted to wheel with just one and then ended up shearing off all the studs. So makes me believe they are important.

there is an upgrade that you can run 10mm studs instead of the stock 8mm. I did not want to drill out my hubs since i still daily drive my 80. i was told that 100 series rear hubs run the 10 mm stock. I have heard that after the upgrade they didnt have issues anymore. I may try it on my zuk buggy that has a minitruck front axles with hubs. i have not had any issues with the aisin selectable hubs.. so i didn't see the point to drill out the hubs and run flanges...yet.

What's the deal with the ARP studs? Are they the same size just stronger metal or something?

Ok thanks.
