dowels break?
dowels break?
We have come to the conclusion that the dowels does not help with the strength on this setup but only serve to align the axle to the hub. They keep the drive flange, or the rear axle shaft flange centered on the hub instead of relying on the cone washers and studs to do so.
They are brittle and will easily break. Check for yourself. Put one in a vice and hit it with hammer sideways. It will snap right off.
What is more, they are a slight press fit on one side but not the other. In most cases where you break them, you will see that the hole was ovalized and does not fit the dowels anymore.
Joe, our tech runs a Toyota buggy with a 80 series hybrid axle in the front. Having had to deal with this issue for years, he decided to try something.
He has removed the dowels and studs and machined the hub to take flywheel bolts. He has 40" tyres, a 4.7l v8 and they do some crazy stuff with the buggy. Ever since he has done that, they do not loosen up anymore and he does not break studs anymore.
