—24 pages are you kidding?? You guys are all ****ing insane over this transfer case fluid thing.
To be fair, it did take 24 pages to get data that answers the questions asked in the first post almost 8 years ago.

Understood. But, I’m curious to know how many failed transfer cases we have seen here since then.
I can remember reading about two or three, though I doubt those were from running regular gear oil.

I hope to get mine up to at least 400k.. the special fluid being so dark and smelling so odd had me wondering why toyota felt that was necessary.

People talk about "unicorn tears..."
Perhaps it's unicorn snot!!!
Who doesn’t love some good clean snot? Just ask any respectable TORSEN

All this hoopla to save ~50 bucks. hahah we are dumb.

Ravenol 21$
Toyota 48$

When I ordered ravenol, i couldn't find the original toyota fluid. only after ordering did i realize there was a new version and part #.
either way I will just do another drain/fill in 15K miles.

This is exactly why I looked into it, the new fluid from toyota is hard to find. I went to my local dealer, backordered, can't order it, blah blah blah. Tried to order online and I was only finding 1 quart available, etc. So I was curious if there was a close aftermarket alternative. But for a fluid that is not changed often, I wanted to use something that was equivalent.

Plus, it is interesting to me. Same reason I change my own oil and do an oil analysis, it is interesting to me.

I was picking up an order of parts recently at a local Toyota dealer. Asked my parts guy what's up with the new transfer case fluid and he said it's nearly impossible to get. He said > just get it serviced here, they have it....No thanks. Ravenol 75w has treated me fine.

I've got one of those super old school parts guys. He sourced me a brand new 80 series 1fzfe short block within a few weeks from Japan. He's pretty good. He can find almost anything.

My guy cannot find the LF-75w, I live near Red lines headquarters that's in benicia California, I talked to the lubrication engineer today and he confirmed the availability of Toyota's lf75 is a nightmare and that the red line mt-lv-75w exceeds the Toyota LF fluid.

A gallon of red line is only 90 bucks.

Curious why this stuff is so hard to get.

My local Toyota dealer in South Florida was able to get it in January (although was a bit of a lead time item and they bitched about it; they were also doing the TC fluid service so were incentivized to find it).

I'll double check. Thanks for the part number

It is strange and very strange of Mr. T. It's not to have more stuff available. One of my concerns is a few of the local shops apparently are using gl5 basic 75w90. My understanding is the brass bits soft metals inside the 200 series and Tundra transfer cases have the brass soft bits

Many lubrication base stocks are in short supply due to the Iranian conflict. Producing a low-volume niche product like Toyota "liquid gold" is probably very, very low on the priority list for base stock and specialty lubricant producers right now.

It will probably take years for specialty refining capacity to be re-established (and hopefully on-shored a bit more in the US), so I'd suggest finding an alternate lubricant now with the expectation that Toyota LG won't be available for the foreseeable future.

This may be heresy but I don't think you guys would notice the difference between Toyota LG and a $10/quart 80W-90 conventional GL-4 fluid.

I'd like to leans towards something more reliable like a heavier fluid like an 80 to 90w but redline was pretty clear. They're confident in their mt-lv-75 so I'll probably go that way.

Who knows what the market's doing or what it's going to do, right, I think it's interesting Mr T even went with the lf75w.

If I had a wish list for Mr. T I'd say go back to your engineering practices of the late '90s early 2000s for a reliability focus, And for the love of God, would you please bring the entire 70 series Land Cruiser suite into North America including the V8 twin turbo diesel cuz I'll take a 79 series pretty please 🤣

Yea...if the "liquid gold" is having problems due to the gulf conflict, this means it is a Group 3 synthetic which in reality means it isn't really a pure synthetic like a group 4 and 5. It is a highly refined, petroleum product with possible synthetic additives.

I wonder if the Redline MT-LV-75 is a superior product based on your description

We have CAFE fuel economy regulations to thank for many things, like 0W20 oil and auto start/stop buttons.

I suspect 75W only exists for a marginal fuel economy improvement over 75W90. If Toyota can save 0.1 mpg on every truck/SUV running LG, that makes their CAFE rating go up. I also suspect that Toyota never cared much about the availability of the LG fluid for actual owners, after all the EPA fuel economy rating that CAFE is based is probably established based on the as-delivered vehicle. If the factory TC fill is LG and it gets 0.1 mpg better in the EPA test, that may have been the end goal of LG fluid. If Toyota cared what the 2nd TC fill after the LG is, they would promote their own lubricants (pre- and post-Iranian conflict) through their dealers and make them widely available for purchase. But they have not done that. Again, lots of speculation on my part, but Toyota shares little info so we are left to speculate :).

Luckily my GX470 specs GL5 75W90 for it's Torsen center diff, so that is what I run.
