Will I need to automatically bleed the system or maybe just replacing the hose only does not require this.

Replacing the hose ONLY…not removing the box itself. This is the hose from the power steering pump down to the steering box.

Not sure if removing this hose also requires me to bleed the system or not. Pretty sure that it’s the hose leaking & that I don’t need to replace the box itself. Life would be a lot easier if I don’t have to bleed this thing.

You would have to bleed it. Put both front wheels on jack stands and turn wheels side to side (full clock) until bubble release. Keep tab of fluid level. Easier than bleeding brakes.

@ceylonfj40nut thank you CD. Not what I wanted to hear…but expected.🎯

I never "bled" the PS on my 62, despite having the steering apart numerous times. Never jacked it up or anything like that. Just filled it with fluid with the cap off, turned the wheels lock to lock a few times, shut it off and let it sit for 5 minutes to let the bubbles in the reservoir dissipate, and then it was fine after that.

Facts - or go take it for a short spin around the parking lot - start it - crank the wheels some or drive in figure 8 and done in 2 min

Slight delay, replaced the hose with one I had in my stash. And it began leaking worse than my original one.

Down to Napa to have them put a new hose on my connections. Will pick it up & install it tomorrow.

John I have a new OEM and Napa 62 hose if you want to buy one. I have no use for both. They took a few weeks to get delivered.

Wow! Thanks @cliffrdavis …just a bit late tho.🙉

It’s at Napa & I pick it up tomorrow. Napa has to cut my metal ends off & then they put their own connections on. I don’t really like the connections they use & could be interested in yours after all.

How about please send me a PM with the price you need and a picture would be great. Thanks a bunch.

The FJ62 hose will not work for a FJ60, 2F vs. 3F power steering pump placement with 2F on driver side and 3F on passenger side.

@Godwin Jim I follow your post because you know what you’re talking about AND you always get right to to point…

But my understanding is that a 62 steering box will fit on 4/‘85 and later fj60. So the box itself will fit…but not the hose from the pump to the box. The pump on the passenger side & the box itself on the US driver side.

After getting a mental picture of this I believe you are correct. Thanks.

John, yes since you have an '85 a steering box, with parallelogram bolt pattern, can receive a steering box from 85-87 FJ60, FJ62 (I think these are the same as the late FJ60's boxes), and 1991-1997 80 series. With any of these steering boxes your power steering hoses will still bolt up.

The routing of the hoses is what differs. With the FJ62 (3FE) power steering pump on the right side of the engine the hose routing runs from there across the front of the frame to the steering box.

All correct! I should have read closer and noted you had a 60 hose you were looking for! Hope it worked out. I found a local shop that built me a high pressure hose for cheaper than both the OEM and NAPA one and only took 24 hours! Hope it works out for you!

Thanks @cliffrdavis , no problem. I had Napa put a new rubber hose on. They had to cut off part of the end metal connections & then used some parts of my metal and also theirs…$98 out the door.

Still haven’t put on the new/good hose yet, will get after it tomorrow. If my diagnosis of my issue is correct, this should solve my problem. Time will tell.🤞

New hose is installed & so far so good. No leaks after a minor 30 mile test drive.

The real test will be next weekend as I will be joining some friends on a 4 day camp out/wheeling adventure to the little town of Alamo, Nv.

I stopped there to eat, once - On the NV 93, yes? Gonna be hot ?
Yep, on the 93, about 5 hours from home for me…in the LandCruiser.🙉 It certainly can & often is hot there but not so bad while we are there. 91* the Friday we arrive but only hi 70*’s by the time we leave on Monday.

Nite time lows in the Mid to low 50*s which isn’t too bad as me & 1 other guy & wife will be sleeping in our rigs.

FJ Cruiser, 2 Jeeps & me in my 60.
